 "ENDLESSY ENJOYABLE 8.75 OUT OF 10" 2009-07-22
By ACEMAN1 (Ripon, California)
There's something endlessly likable about this film, and it never gets old to watch. In this day and age I rarely rave about a children's film because so many of them are awful. Growing up, I watched practically every animated Disney classic you can think of including Pixar films, but then a dreaded year called 2005 came around. This was one of the worst years in the history of cinema and it unleashed a tidal wave of awfulness which included two animated films; Chicken Little and Madagascar. I absolutely hate both of these films which almost completely destroyed my liking for animated films. Then 2006 came around and I was treated to Happy Feet, which would go down as the worst film I've ever seen and would earn the lowest score I've ever handed a product on this site (0 out of 10). Then 2007 dropped the utterly terrible Meet the Robinsons film smack dab in my lap. These films are the reasons why I watch almost nothing but films that would make a parent cringe if their kids watched them. But then, I came across this film, and out of curiosity I decided I wanted to see it. It felt like a splash of much-needed cold water to the face and proved to me I can still have hope for the future animated films. Foolish me, I shouldn't have doubted Pixar films.

WHAT IT'S ABOUT: This film takes place somewhere in the year 2800. Earth is a barren wasteland of garbage where virtually no life is present, except for a little robot named Wall-E who more than 700 years ago along with a number of other robots was tasked with cleaning up all of the garbage on Earth by crushing it into cubes and and piling it up. Now he along with a small bug are the only living things on the planet and he goes through a daily routine of crushing garbage, piling it up, and collecting anything of interest to him. While he's going through garbage one day he finds a small plant inside of a refrigerator, puts it in a shoe and puts inside of him. Then a mysterious ship lands on the planet and lone robot called Eva is left there. Her goals as it turns out is to find any source of life that would prove that Earth would be finally habitable. Wall-E is afraid to approach Eva because she is armed with a powerful laser gun that can destroy large objects with no problem. But when a sandstorm comes around, he takes Eva back to his home where he shows her around and then shows her the plant he found. She acts strangely, takes the plant, and then appears to go into a sleep mode with a strange flashing green sign on her. Days later, the mysterious ship returns and takes Eva back, but Wall-E follows the ship and hangs on for dear life as he is taken into space to a strange ship. The people on board have been living there for 700 years and have gotten morbidly obese and rely on moving chairs and a computer screens to get them through daily life while the machines run most of everything else. From then on, Wall-E and Eva are taken on one crazy adventure that's very memorable and very enjoyable.

MUSIC: The music in this film was highly enjoyable and very well done. It fit well with the tone of the film.

ACTING: The voice-actors were pretty good and the dialogue and humor was funny as well. I have no gripes with this area, Pixar has always done a good job of finding talented actors.

ACTION: This film could be crazy at times and was rarely boring to watch. The only boring part of the film was the beginning which started slow. However, the film quickly picks up steam afterwards and you will be treated to a highly entertaining film. My biggest complaint against the film however, is the fact it felt as if they didn't take the story as far as it could have gone.

OVERALL: If you love Pixar films or just good films in general, Wall-E is a must-see. Both kids and adults will get a kick out of this film because it's endlessly likable in almost every way. It is flawed, but those are easy to overlook. This is easily one of the best animated films of the decade, no question.

THE GOOD: Stunning CGI animation, great music, good storyline, good humor, good actors, and plenty of action to go around.

THE BAD: Slow beginning and it felt as if Pixar didn't take the film as far as it could have gone.

"The best Pixar film in the last few years" 2009-07-22
By Garrett Lloyd (Oklahoma, USA)
Pixar has never faulted in making great films that can last, Wall-E is no different. Every Pixar movie is so so creatively different than the previous film that its impossible to guess what is next. Wall-E is much different than previous Pixar films as it goes into the future and space, something only mentioned before.

Wall-E gives us all a lesson on protecting the planet. It is thousands of years into the future and earth is no longer habitable from the pollution and junk littered throughout the landscape. Wall-E discovers a plant which leads to an adventure in space with the many humans living on a spaceship. This movie hardly has much dialogue which makes it more creative and in some ways a better movie. Mainly it is a family movie but it is fun to watch for all ages. Pixar has once again made a great hit and it will last for many years to come.

On the DVD: the case itself is eco-friendly which makes it easier to accidently break. The DVD also has only a small bit of special features. But if you just want to watch a movie go ahead and look for the single disc version in a normal DVD case. If you want extra content get the three disc version, but this does have two short films and deleted scenes, but these features don't last very long.

"Entertaining film but not ideal for toddlers" 2009-07-20
By Brian A. Schar (Menlo Park, CA United States)
I saw "Wall-E" some years ago on an airplane flight, and it caught my attention from the beginning. Pixar managed to tell a story where there is virtually no dialogue in the first half of the movie, and only 2 characters. Three, if you count the cockroach. And, yet, it works beautifully, like a modern CGI silent movie. The dialogue begins once the movie reaches about the halfway point, and we enter the _Axiom_. The artwork and direction is outstanding, and the story held my interest. The environmental thing is a little annoying, but living in the Bay Area, I'm somewhat inured to green-y hectoring as background noise, so I just filter a lot of that out. Plus, how can you not love any movie that has a "Rogue Robots!" alert in it?

My 2 year old didn't enjoy it as much as me. She didn't hate it; she was simply bored by the first part of the movie due to the lack of dialogue. Unlike "Nemo," where she ran around for days afterward demanding to see "Nemo, Nemo, Nemo!" over and over again, I didn't hear "Nemo" or "Eva" at all after the movie was over. "Wall-E" isn't inappropriate for a 2 year old by any means, but may be just a little over their heads. It's great for adults, but you may want to wait until your kids are 4-5 if you want them to enjoy this.

"Unbelievable for everybody-NOT JUST KIDS" 2009-07-18
By John Pross
I am a 26 year old guy that listens to hard rock and is not a big fan of animated movies. When a movie says it's for "the family" it usually means it's for kids and they throw in a few jokes only adults will get so they won't lose their freaking minds when they're sitting through it with their 5-year-old. Those movies don't hold my attention.

So please understand how significant it is that this one very much did.

It is not a movie FOR kids. Don't get me wrong. Kids will love it because it has cute little robots throughout, and nothing even remotely offensive. However the plot is not about cartoon cars getting ready for the big race or moving, talking toys. (nothing wrong with that, just not as much my cup of tea) And that is where the genius lies. The plot deals with humans who are becoming more and more lazy, trashing our planet, things that are actually happening. Things that are not only entertaining in this context, but are important. It is not only an interesting concept with (REALLY) amazing animation and a robot love story. It takes humanity and looks into an almost science-fiction, but yet unfortunately a not too terribly unbelievable journey hundreds of years into our future. It's a rare occasion, and possibly the first for an animated film, to not just be a great movie. But to be an important one. And I believe Wall-e has accomplished that.

This is a classic movie any way you slice it. It may be difficult for some to endure with its lack of dialogue. But once it gets rolling, it will keep your attention and make you think about us as a human race, not to mention keep a smile on your face the whole time. Get it.

I love walle, so I don't mind if my kids love it too. It has become the movie of the month--we watch it every day because my 3 and 4 yr old ask for it every day. Last month is was shrek 2 and before that Nemo. Walle is a great movie, but again, the disk is defective-- I have to start it five or ten times before it actually runs through. I'll be asking for a replacement.

First, my sony blue ray is not connected to the internet and i had no trouble watching it at all, sound and picture are excellent, Eventhough is an old movie but it is worthy to get it

What a great way to view one of the best movies ever made! I dont buy blu-ray for most movies but the visual difference is crazy with this one, also the extended version was great, I dont know why they cut the 21 extra minutes. Watching the T-1000 melt and get shot and heal was awesome. If you are a fan of this movie this is the only way to view it at home.

"Great looking disc, but very slow-loading" 2009-06-29
By Brainiac (Somewhere, USA)
This "Skynet Edition" of T2 is the best looking release of T2 to date. The picture is sharp and detailed. It's not overly grainy, nor does it look like the grain has been reduced too much.

I can't judge the audio from a home-theater buff's perspective, as my only audio source is the TV's built-in speakers, but it sounds great on my TV. The main uncompressed audio track has a very wide dynamic range...sometimes too wide, actually. I have to turn the sound up quite a bit to hear dialogue clearly, then I'm blown away by the action scenes which are way too loud. This might not be as much of an issue for those with better audio systems though.

The only gripe I have about this disc is the insanely slow loading times. I have a pretty new Panasonic DMP-BD60 Blu-Ray player and the disc takes 2-3 minutes to load initially. Once the main menu has loaded, you can watch the film and special features easily, but if you want to watch with any of the informational overlays (script, production notes, storyboards, etc.) in the "interactive mode" then you have to wait again as the interactive mode loads. Just plan on taking a bathroom break or something after you pop the disc in while you wait for it to load.

The BD-Live feature is, I think, a big plus on this disc. Several "making-of" type features that were on previous releases of T2 can be downloaded via the BD-Live interface. So even though you don't own every previous DVD release of the film, you can still watch the special features that came with them. There are some other BD-Live features which I haven't tried, such as an interactive chess game of some sort.

If you haven't picked up T2 on Blu-Ray, this is definitely the one to get. Great picture, great sound, and good special features make this worth $20 you pay for it, as long as you don't mind the slow loading times.

 "Amazing" 2009-07-27

A truly amazing series, made even more amazing on Blu-Ray.

Unlike many other movies/TV series out there, this one is surprisingly accurate in its depictions. The production staff went to great lengths to ensure accuracy, and while everything isn't perfect, it's reassuring to know that they at least tried!

The great camerawork allows you to see World War II as if you were on the battlefield.

Although it's a "war movie", it's not all guns and explosions ... there is character development, and I think the acting was really superb. That being said, there IS action, so brace yourself for some gruesome details!

A must-watch, a truly amazing work that anyone who with an interest in World War Two should see.

Just to reinforce what others have already said:

Its a fantastic war series, as good if not better than "Saving Private Ryan."

The video quality and sound is what other movies need be compared against. The sound stage and 3d quality of uncompressed audio is far clearly than many BD releases, and DVD cannot compete. As the movie is so detailed, crisp, clear, one can see so much on repeat viewings than on lesser resolutions, and still be entertained.

I was given the older DVD version several years ago & enjoyed same. After reading many reviews on the Blu-Ray Edition at Amazon, I had to have this product. My calculations has Lt,. then Cap't. Winters about 8 years my senior. But for the accident of birth, who knows what would have happened to me. As it was, I served 2 years during WWII, most of it after the war in Europe was over. Cap't Winter has retired to his farm in Pennsylvania.

The Blu-Ray Edition in my opinion is far better in PQ & AQ. I must have a very good BR player, because It produces such a good pic and sound, 5.1 DTS. I ordered from Amazon and opted for their 2-3 day delivery. It came in a large bubble type envelope via UPS in perfect condition in two days. I, for one am ecstatic. Shown on my 50" plasma HDTV, I have the best of both worlds. By the way, there are many language subtitles for those of us who are hearing impaired. Also Amazon beat other providers by about $20.

I rarely rate a movie (have over 700 now) but I had to add my 2 cents. Every High School History class should see this. They would then understand a few things like loyalty, dedication and sacrifice. I doubt America could win another war like WWII. I salute Easy Company!

 "Great movie, 3-d overrated" 2009-07-30
By Keith J. Kovtun (Detroit)
I loved the movie itself. Its a good story line (even if it is a little alice in wonderlandish) throught the rabbit hole (the door) creepy cat that dissapears when it wants to (the cat) and even the evil queen. Aside from that awesome movie and i love alice in wonderland so this is just another to enjoy. The three stars are for the reason of the 3-d. IT BLOWS It gave me a headache and even thought we had the room pitch black it was terribly blurry and just not fun. I thought the 2-d versions was more 3-d. Also this isnt the typical 3-d. nothing comes out of the screen at you at all. The only purpose of it is to give the movie some more depth. This failed as it was just mostly blurry and when it did work it still was shaded blue and red due to the glasses which just made me wish to have an antenna to adjust the film. Needless to say i switched the film to 2-d a third of the way through and will probably not ever watch the 3-d version again. The company could just put the 2-d on the disc and sell it for $10 or just sell the 2 disc for the amount of the single edition. Loved the movie hated the 3-d.

"in response to reviewers like Kathleen Buckley" 2009-07-30
By R. Anderson (Austin, TX)
below what I have written is Kathleen Buckley's ...well, review [which really isn't a review; rather, it's a rant].

~A little on the strong side are we Kathleen? Your review is a little ridiculous. I'm tired of other parents [& yes, I am a parent] giving ignorant reviews like this one. it's time we as parents start taking a little responsibility for what we let are kids do/watch & stop blaming the people creating the entertainment like it's their fault for making something for others to enjoy. This movie IS good, definitely not the greatest film ever, but very good & I am NOT AT ALL a Hot Topic kind of person [far from it]. The fact is, if you want to "guard" your children by keeping them away from anything you feel is sick or dark or wrong rather than explaining to them what something is, so when they do see it/experience it...[maybe at a friends place] they will understand it, then far be it from me to tell you otherwise, & please, continue to shelter your kids from what's out there [cause that's really going to help them in the long run...]. but what you're doing here is wrong & unfair to those actually trying to get a true review on the movie as a movie. this is slander of the worst kind, and i really think you should be ashamed.

& how hard is it to teach your children to separate imagination from reality? ...oh wait, it's just easier to keep them from it. isn't it?

Kathleen's "review": [*] = an insert by me :)

As an illustrator [*what does that have to do w/ anything], I have to send a strong warning. THIS IS NOT FOR CHILDREN.

This is a demented vile film being aimed at children as young as 11 years old. It's one of the most psychologically disturbing twisted films I've ever seen [*quite a stretch]. It looks superficially like a benign animated film, but in reality, you discover it's an animated film wrapped around darkness, evil, voodoo, violence and insanity [*again, quite a stretch]. Please, consider strongly whether to let a child see this sick flick [*good god!]. If you read the editors summary, please note the clear mention of "dark and creepy," "demonic grins," "disturbing and intriguing". Sound like an R rated horror movie? I happen to love horror movies, but films such as those are not aimed at children nor should they be. THIS IS NOT CINDERELLA'S EVIL STEP MOTHER. It's so much worse. It's a demented story about a hideous evil entity trying to get a child [*which is totally unthinkable... something or someone sick trying to get a child...hmm].

Sometimes artistic freedom is confused with license. In this case the producer has used artistic "License," to make a film that is sick and warped...and yes, disgustingly aimed at children [*which it wasn't! I'm tired of people saying this just because it's flipping animated].

In this film, a core element is dolls that are created by an evil being to look like characters being chosen for exploitation...isn't that a voodoo doll? Oh, and how about the idea of sewing buttons into a live child's eyes, "It will only hurt a little." This film made, "Blue Velvet," look like a tea party [*...yeah].

Love your children. Guard your children. This is Hollywood once again spewing their twisted dreams on the public. In this case, aiming vilely at children. [*AND HOW Kathleen!!! <--sarcasm]

& now, my review. [short & sweet]: (no real spoilers here)

this movie is creative, in-depth, funny, intense, eerie & results in a happy ending. Plus, the animation is outstanding! there is depth to the characters, especially w/ Coraline, and I can honestly say it was quite enjoyable. very recommended. & definitely NOT one star... [but I can't speak for the 3D animation problem].

"Creative and wildly imaginative. Kind of scary too." 2009-07-30
By AIROLF (USA)
Wildly imaginative, intriguing, and delightful, Coraline is not a kid's film. It's an animated film for adults and it's dark in nature. To say that this film is creative wouldn't do it justice - Neil Geiman and Henry Selick have a vision beyond anything previously seen on the screen (although the opening sequence is very much an homage to The Nightmare Before Christmas and is reminiscent of Corpse's Btide). I can imagine rewatching this dark tale over and over and gaining something from it every single time.

"Great Story Terrible 3D on DVD" 2009-07-30
By Paul Tominac (San Francisco)
I loved seeing this movie in the theater with digital 3D, but the old fashioned green/orange version you get with this DVD wipes out the color and did little to enhance the film with the feeble 3d effects that were provided. If it makes a difference, I watched it on a large flat screen monitor. So, the bad news out of the way, the movie was great.

The film is creepy in the halloween aesthetic so favored by Tim Burton, but done here with a bit less of the macabre than in "Nightmare Before Christmas". The "other mother" turns out to be a spidery creature with the typical Burtonesque mechanical hinged hands, and rag dolls populate the "other world", and when they are dispatched, they don't bleed, they lose sand. The film is set in Oregon, and to a point manages to suggest a bit of the misty romance of the western part of that soggy, mountainous state. But for all the sets and effects, it's the story that carries this film. And the story, despite the near relentless gloom and creep, is quite positive. A lonely girl, transplanted from Detroit (where you would think she would have at least some relief at having escaped) to the Oregon countryside by her self employed, and self absorbed writer parents, finds a secret door to a mirror-image apartment, and a mirror image family that is everything hers isn't, including not real and very dangerous. It seems the "other mother" also referred to in the film as "the beldam" an archaic word for an old hag (although she hasn't that characteristic at all) creates a fantasy world to draw children to her, then she sews buttons on their eyes (they don't go into detail on this) and locks them behind a mirror where she eats their life (or their soul, the film says life, which seems odd).

Along comes Coraline who, unlike the three other kids who fell afoul of the beldam, decides she's not that lonely, and fights back. Given all the time and energy it took to get to that point, the film resolves itself a bit too quickly from there, for my tastes, but it does it so well; a nice bit of chocolate or fine cheese that was portioned a bit too small, and there isn't any more as you find out afterwards... The thing about the two worlds in this film, is that it isn't just Coraline's family that gets the treatment. The old Russian acrobat upstairs and the two burlesque performers downstairs also have star turns in the "other world" that really delight the viewer. I managed to find a review on a "family" website that was very good, until it got to the nudity part... I'll mention that because they did, as apparently it's an issue for some people. In the burlesque scene, in a vaudeville theater that the ladies apartment becomes in the "other world" they do what they did when they were younger, except that now they're not, and they're very, very out of shape, but you do have two stop-animation figures cavorting about in a vaudeville burlesque routine about mermaids and sirens, and one of them is but for the saving graces of glittering pasties and g-strings all but naked. And then, the women materialize in their more youthful form, in show-nothing one piece bathing suits that would have made Mr. Hayes proud, and there you are. I'd hate to think I ruined your day if I led you into a purchase that has partial stop animation nudity among the clay-rines.

So, I heartily recommend the film, and just as heartily suggest you watch the 2D version as it seems to be enhanced (ala "Roger Rabbit") such that it has greater depth without having 3D. The 3D, in the theater, was not so much the hatchet flying off the screen variety of old, but added a degree of depth and realism to the story. I wonder if one brought home the glasses from the theater, one would have better results with the 3D here? And then I ask, why aren't the live action films this good?

"3D not ready for home use yet" 2009-07-30
By W. Mueller (Chicago area)
I got the DVD of "Coraline" today and had to look at it. The 3D is based on the Red/Green system - not polarized. The upshot is that although the effect is there it picture is dim/muted by the glasses. I found it hard on the eyes. Also, the effect is less pronounced than in the theater. All in all, the 2D version is better for home viewing.

That said - it is a great movie!

"A Vampire Tale for Grown Folk!" 2009-07-29
By Michelle R. AKA "Nicolette Rivers" (Minnesota)
I have HBO, but only caught bits and pieces of it on the channel. If a show gets enough positive buzz, I make the leap of faith and buy it on DVD or blu-ray for the extras. I enjoyed it so much that I watched the series in record time -- and it would have been faster had I not made a commitment to watch it with my husband. He really enjoyed it too, he just doesn't have my ability to completely OD on a show. True Blood is very good at cliffhangers and that pretty much compels you to watch the next episode right away.

The show is definitely adult and every episode is packed with adult themes and activities. (While Sookie and Bill the vampire head towards greater intimacy at a fast pace, the show still milks the slightest reason to break them up, like any show.) It's nice to wrest the vampire them away from children and teenyboppers, although they probably watch this too, yeah? The concept is supposed to be dark, sexy, dangerous, and wrong. The dark humor is also welcome.

I've watched the commentary for the pilot featuring Alan Ball -- pretty good -- but no other commentaries so far. The shows also feature an option for enhanced viewer. What this means -- and it is meant for subsequent viewings, but the show is rewatchable -- is that maps pop up to show you where the characters live, facts and hints are given, and Lafayette (a character on the show) pops in to give you some gossip or wisdom. It was an interesting way to make the world seem even more real and to fill in back story.

Recommended for fans of the vampire myth, dark humor, the occasionally cringe-worthy moment, and the demented sensibilities of Alan Ball (Six Feet Under.) And, of course, for fans of the Charlaine Harris books.

(I watched on my PSP with no issues.)

Let me start off by saying that I love True Blood. I watched some of them on HBO, and I was anxious to buy them when they came out, especially hearing they were on Blu-Ray. The series is wonderful and I loved every episode when I rented the series on DVD. I would watch them over and over.

However, I was really annoyed by what I saw as a blatant attempt to charge more money by HBO for the BluRay set. I remember the HiDef format war between BluRay and HD-DVD, and one of the selling points of BluRay is that it could be cheaper because it can store 6 times as much data as a regular DVD. So why is it that TB S1 is on 5 DVD's, and in BR is on 5 BR disks? I have grave doubts that moving the show to 1080p makes each episode's data 6 times as large. In other words, HBO put the season on 5 disks to justify their being able to charge more. BluRay could have saved them money, but they won't pass that on to customers. For that, I sadly won't allow myself to buy the show.

This Tv show really has it all, Sex, gore and some truly interesting characters. Just the kind of show HBO needs to bring it back into the mainstream. Anna Paquin is perfect as butter-wouldn't-melt Sookie Stackhouse (Yes that's really her name!) Sink your teeth into it! Ha Ha, I'm so funny.

"A Great Show is Stunning on Blu-ray" 2009-07-16
By B. A. Chaney (Baltimore, MD USA)
True Blood is great TV, and while not as psychologically deep as some of HBOs earlier hit shows (like The Wire or The Sopranos) it is a multi-layered show that looks at some of the deeper prejudices of American society. True Blood has a little bit of everything--romance, sex, violence, along with lots of vampire mythology for the vampire fans out there.

If you are a fan of the show and you have access to Blu-ray I highly suggest you pay the extra money for the Blu-ray version of this show. After watching the show on both standard def DVDs and on Blu-ray, there is simply no comparison. The colors are richer on Blu-ray, particularly in the night scenes, where the dark colors don't simply blend together but really pop. The image is also just crisper overall. The sound is also better, with more layers of the soundtrack readily audible on the Blu-ray version.

Sometimes TV shows are dissapointing on Blu-ray, since the initial filming of the show was not done on high enough quality media to produce an acceptably sharp Blu-ray version. However, its clear the crew of True Blood were keeping Blu-ray in mind when they shot the show because it just looks great in this format.

"All other Vampire stuff sucks now!" 2009-07-15
By Theodor Black
I never knew about the books but after watching this, I totally got them. This show is amazing. I love all the characters. There is so much mystery that I'm always interested. It's funny. Everything is good and solid: writing, acting, directing, effects. If you ask me, this show is so good, it has ruined most other vampire shows and movies for me because it is so good. Lost Boys and Interview are still watchable now but that's it. True Blood has set a new level of excellence.

"Way Better Than The Marine!" 2009-07-28
By CENA ROCKS!!! (Queens NY)
I'm a Cena fan, so when I bought The Marine on DVD, I expected better. Turned out, it was just a movie where Cena saved his wife some from evil diamond robber. Wasn't my kind of movie. But THIS is different. Yes, Cena is the hero...again. That doesn't necessarily mean the movie's bad. This movie actually has a point, unlike The Marine. And damn, is the evil guy smart! He had it all laid out! Don't listen to those Cena haters out there, they think this movie's bad because Cena's playing the hero again. I'm not exactly the action movie fan-one of the only other action movies I've seen is "The Condemned", and that was because it had Stone Cold in it. You must watch this movie, it's awesome-don't assume it's the same as The Marine. Because I'm a BIG Cena fan, and I agree with people who thought The Marine was a disappointment. Seriously-this one's better.

 "The Marine + Die Hard 3 = 12 Rounds" 2009-07-27
By D.P. (California)
If anyone has seen the past movies from WWE Studios (formerly WWE Films), you know that they are usually a generic "B-movie" formula that made movies in the 1980's popular but really out of date with today's audience. See No Evil was a generic "bad guy chases after kids" horror movie, Behind Enemy Lines: Columbia was a basic military movie, and The Marine (which also starred John Cena) was your simple action movie filled with a one-dimensional plot of the good guy chasing the bad guys.

12 Rounds was similar to "The Marine" in regards to the main plot of the good guy (John Cena as New Orleans Detective Danny Fisher) chasing the bad guy (Aidan Gillen from "The Wire" as Miles Jackson) after he kidnaps his girlfriend (Ashley Scott from "Jericho" as Molly Porter). However, unlike "The Marine", there are more elements to the movie than just the whole "good guy chase the bad guy & get the girl" concept as this movie will also remind you of "Die Hard With A Vengance/Die Hard 3" in that Jackson is seeking revenge for being caught by Danny a year earlier, which resulted in Jackson's girlfriend accidently getting killed in the process, so Jackson sets up these "rounds" for Danny to go through in order to get closer to Jackson & get his girl back. The other twist to this story is the F.B.I. getting involved with this whole situation and one agent (Steve Harris from "The Practice" as George Aiken) having a personal vendetta against Jackson & wants to get him no matter who or what is sacrificed in the process...including Fisher's girlfriend. So in addition to going through these task & puzzles, Fisher also needs to figure out "is the enemy of my enemy my friend or my enemy too?"

DVD extras include a feature on the movie stunts, a gag reel, 2 alternative endings with alternative commentary from John Cena along with writer Daniel Kunka...who also did alternative commentary on the movie, and another alternative movie commentary with the director Renny Harlin complete the extras.

In the end, out of the five WWE films (See No Evil, The Marine, The Condenmed, Behind Enemy Lines: Columbia), this one was my favorite right next to The Condemned. In the end, 12 Rounds didn't come off as a dated B-level generic movie as it made a good mix of action along with different levels of plot & character development. This is without a doubt worth a look.

And as an ironic sidenote for WWE wrestling fans, you may recognize the girlfriend (Ashley Scott) from another movie where he played that same girlfriend role to another WWE superstar (at that time)..."Walking Tall" starring The Rock.

"PRETTY GOOD SECOND FLICK FROM CENA" 2009-07-15
By fmwaalex (Austin, TX USA)
12 ROUNDS

John Cena is an entertaining fella regardless of what some would have you believe and is a very charismatic guy. In the ring on the mic or in a movie he is an appealing enough guy [especially for the ladies I guess because my girl is into him] to keep most people entertained. Now I will be the first guy to tell you that is not going to win any Oscars for his acting [yet] and neither will this film since it is pretty much a rip off of "Die Hard 3" but it is interesting none the less. Is it better than his last film "The Marine" you may ask, well in some ways yes and in others no. To be honest I think "The Marine" is more fun as it is over the top kinda in a cartoonish kinda way, but this one is good as well.

Danny Fisher is just your average street cop trying to make detective as is his partner Hank Carver and on one fateful night the just might get their wish. But to do that they must find Miles Jackson a bad guy on the FBI's most wanted list and he was spotted in the area. Cena, I mean Danny has a good eye because he notices Miles's girlfriend driving, off a hunch or feeling he and his partner pull her over only to be under gun fire from Miles once the car has stopped. I guess it was a good guess or just a good eye but they caught on to these two on the run.

After a short chase on foot Danny catches up to them only to witness the woman get killed after trying to escape and getting hit by a car. This is actually one of my favorite scenes in the film but at this point Miles sets in with his revenge kick as he wants to know his name. Fast forward a couple of years and Miles has escaped and not only that but when Danny is out one day he gets a call, from Miles. He has Danny's wife and wants Danny to play a little game with him, a city wide game lasting over 12 rounds if Danny can make it that long. So the race is on to save his wife and catch this guy one more time.

This is an obvious rip off of Die Hard 3 but it is a fun one to be honest and is just meant to be straight up action. This film has plenty of that from fights to shoot outs to explosions to fast cars, you get it all on this Renny Harlin helmed film. One part in particular is very entertaining and it involves a tram, a car, a little carnival, and two very brave men in that one car. I won't ruin it but it is one of the highlights of the film. Still there is plenty of action else were like a nice fire truck scene and plenty of things going boom.

As for the games he has to play they are interesting as well such as the one involving the elevator, which is a favorite of mine. But every one time up in the end much like another movie like this one did, can you guess what it is? Director Renny Harlin who directed the second film in the Die Hard series does a good job with the action and stuff but only decent with every thing else. Daniel Kunka did a good enough job with his first script but it is basically well you know what film it is, not entirely but the idea is basically the same.

John Cena as usual is a charismatic guy and has good screen presence but he is never given enough to work with other than the action. Like I have said before Cena has the potential to be a really good actor, maybe not as good as The Rock but definitely better than Hogan [every body is though really]. Aidan Gillen steals the show as the lead villain and is basically the best thing about the film on every level, he needs more villain roles. Every one in the film does a good job but this movie is not about the acting it is about the action. If that is what you are looking for than this film is for you.

Not sure which of his films I like better because both out do one another in some way, I don't know that is your call. This is a good enough film for a rental at the very least and would be wonderful for a Saturday afternoon or something. So sit back and enjoy if this is your thing, I liked it.

Wolverine, fan favorite of the X-Men universe in both comic books and film, gets his own movie vehicle with X-Men Origins: Wolverine, a tale that reaches way, way back into the hairy mutant's story. Somewhere in the wilds of northwest Canada in the early 1800s, two boys grow up amid violence: half-brothers with very special powers. Eventually they will become the near-indestructible warriors (and victims of a super-secret government program) known as Wolverine and Sabretooth, played respectively by Hugh Jackman (returning to his role) and Liev Schreiber (new to the scene). It helps enormously to have Schreiber, an actor of brawny skills, as the showiest villain; the guy can put genuine menace into a vocal inflection or a shift of the eyes. Danny Huston is the sinister government operative whose experiments keep pullin' Wolverine back in, Lynn Collins is the woman who shares a peaceful Canadian co-existence with our hero when he tries to drop out of the program, and Ryan Reynolds adds needed humor, at least for a while. The fast-paced early reels give an entertaining kick-off to the Wolverine saga, only to slow down when a proper plot must be put together--but isn't that perpetually the problem with origin stories? And despite a cool setting, the grand finale is a little hemmed in by certain plot essentials that must be in place for the sequels, which may be why characters do nonsensical things. So, this one is fun while it lasts, if you're not looking for a masterpiece, or an explanation for Wolverine's facial grooming. --Robert Horton

 "Avoid at all costs!!!" 2009-07-27
By B. Redmond
This is, without-a-doubt, one of the worst movies produced in the last 10 years. Honestly, a 9-year-old could have wrote a better plot and better dialogue. This movie's plot has more holes than a battlefield after a bombing run and the production value is abysmal. The special effects look like they came out of the 80's. As a comic-book film, this movie is awful. As a general film, this movie is STILL awful. Seriously, I have never met a person in the real world who actually liked this piece of trash.

By Will
Not sure why some hate this movie so much. The movie and story is great. It breaks down the origin for people who are not comic book readers in a well-done way. If you were to get the entire origin on film, it would be a tv series not a movie. Action was great, Jackman was great, Sabretooth was great... The rest of the cast was good...

One problem I have with it is hollywood taking and changing an existing character to create a new one? You will see. Not sure why they do this when there are so many characters to chose from already.

"Wow..biggest disappointment of the summer" 2009-07-16
By iTy (Nashville, TN)
Wow..I had such high hopes for this film. But it fell flat. Now I'm not a big comic book reader but even I know the wolverine story..AND HE DOESN'T LOSE HIS MEMORY FROM ADAMANTIUM BULLETS. The film wasn't too bad until the end. It wasn't spectacular or anything, but it wasn't horrible. I can overlook the shafting of sub-characters. But when you COMPLETELY re-write a main character, or a main villain...that's when it becomes ridiculous.

As previously mentioned...why they chose to erase Wolverine's memory by shooting him in the head with adamantium bullets...yeah I don't know. Why they chose to have dead pool not have a mouth...don't know. Why they chose to have wolverine have bone claws?!? ...yeah your guess is as good as mine. Heck you may as well have Cable and Apocalypse come back from the future and tag team with wolverine to take out Spiderman, Hercules, and Buzz Lightyear. I understand that certain things must change when adapting something from comics to film. I didn't even mind XMEN 3 when they completely re-wrote the phoenix story. That was because it needed to happen to make it filmable. Bone claws, a mouthless deadpool, and adamantium bullets were NOT needed. I can deal when they have to change things like have agent zero basically fly into a helicopter, or re-write the whole wolverine love affair thing...but when they add crap just to add crap...no..i'm sorry.

I've heard there is supposed to be a dead pool movie coming out...how are they going to manage that one? They are going to have to butcher the already butchered character to make something believable. I don't even want to think about it.

The only reason this movie didn't get one star is because I didn't walk out.
