20th Century Taken (Blu-ray)What could be a skillful but ordinary action flick gets a surprising emotional heft from the presence of Liam Neeson as the hero. Bryan Mills (Neeson) has given up his career as a spy to form a relationship with his estranged teenage daughter--but when, on a trip to Paris, she's kidnapped by slavers, Mills uses all his connections and skills to turn the city of lights upside down and rescue her. Like most of the movies that writer/producer Luc Besson has a hand in (such as La Femme Nikita, The Transporter, Unleashed, and manyother French action movies), Taken drips with lurid violence (a bit toned-down to get a PG-13 rating, but there's still plenty of it), deranged sentimentality, and stereotypes of all kinds. But this doesn't stop his movies from being effective thrill-rides, and Taken is no exception.

I loathe the cliche shoot-em-ups but this flick had me sceaming "Heck Yeah" all the way through. Great acting by Liam, a gripping storyline and lots of action with Liam doing the "Bad Guy Stomp" all the way through... Shout it out!!!

This movie is similar in idea as Man on Fire with Denzel Washington. Very engaging movie, which draws you from beginning to end. Although there aren't many surprising twists, its not the kind of movie where you want it. The special features are pretty cool as well. There is a feature where he has kill count and countdown for when his daughter supposedly will never be found again.

Wasn't sure what I was getting into when wife and oldest daughter wanted me to watch this movie. The first several minutes are slow but so is a roller coaster that ratchets up to the top of the big one...
Hang on to your seats boys and girls. This is a thrill ride!
The bad guys are really bad. But, surprise, surprise, they're up against a one man battalion with a sole mission: to rescue his daughter.
Dad directs his retribution with the focus of a laser and the reprobates get their just reward.
Enjoy the adrenaline! This is a good one!

Action-packed and emotionally driven is the best I have to describe this one. I'm not a fan of action movies made just for the sake of lots of fighting, daredevil driving and shoot 'em up scenes. But, this one has all of that (for anyone who is or is with someone that loves those) and enough genuine heart and motivation to keep those not satisfied with "all action" happy.
I do love Liam, and with the action, he brings the role of disenfranchised-father-who's-passionate-about-creating-a-meaningful-relationship with his daughter to life well.
Bottom Line: Great movie for couples who enjoy action and a story with heart simultaneously, or anyone who enjoyed similiarly veined Con Air or the original Die Hard

Liam Neeson is a tremendous actor and I was intrigued when I saw he was in this movie. Though he has done many roles, I often associate him more with roles such as Michael Collins, Schindler's List and Gangs of New York, as oppossed to more the action roles - though of course he has done turns in those types of movies.
This is a CIA/spy type movie where Liam plays a retired operative whose daughter decides to take a trip to Paris. As a concerned (divorced) father the premise and relationships are set up nicely at the beginning (with some good scenes of Liam hanging out with his spy friends). He is really just a normal guy who wants good things for his daughter and is clearly caring for her. The birthday present and shopping scene was great, not to mention the presentation of the present. Then his daughter is kidnapped shortly after the arrival in France.
Of course there is the element of spy power, guns and exploisions, but there are so many good scenes that it all works well. The phone convervastion he has with the kidnappers at the very beginning - you believe every word he says.
Overall a very well done movie with good plot elements, but which does not tie itself down in trying to make the plot too winding and difficult to follow. Enough twists to keep it entertaining, enough action to keep things moving and ultimately a set of charactors that you wind up caring for and beleiving.
Liam Neeson really pulls this one off.
