I've read neither of the books on which these movies are based, so that is NOT factored into my review.

My initial draw to this movie was due to the fact that I thought it MIGHT be a bit like Devil Wears Prada...a comedic insight to a NY fashion focused life.

It was anything but.

The acting was generally horrid, whatever elements of the plot that could have been funny fell totally flat...this is an instance where ALL of the funny scenes were shown in the trailer with nothing left over for the movie.

The only part of the movie that I found 'cute' was the friendship between the main character and her best friend.

I was extremely disappointed in the lack of entertainment value of this movie all around and honestly blame the director and screenwriter for screwing this up. Maybe throw some blame the actors ways as well.

What a shame...it could have been quite funny.

OK. I've seen neither "Paul Blart: Mall Cop" or this one in theaters, but some of my friends saw one of each and they both said it was really funny. We're trying to catch up on some movies since our video store recently closed down and we finally got Netflix, so we've been trying to catch up one some of 2009's releases. I rented "Paul Blart: Mall Cop" expecting something funny of the movie and apparently I may have chuckled a few times but other than that, it was boring to look at and not even funny. The jokes were extremely pointless and flat.

Now, I feared "Confessions of a Shopaholic" was going to be the same thing. My sister wanted to see it real badly so it was just me, her and my mom one Friday night while my dad was away on business and coming home very late. We were bored and my sister already saw the film but was fine with seeing it again, because she loved it, and I, on the other hand, was going to give this film a chance.

Guess what...I was laughing my butt off through this. Even more than I did "Paul Blart: Mall Cop." Is it entertaining? In ways, it is. Is it funny? Yep, pretty much? Would I highly recommend it to someone? Only if you're a big shopaholic, though I'm more of a someone who wants a really good movie on Blu-Ray (not only would I just be with Netflix, I'll still buy my favorite movies), but I'm not a shopaholic. I just want to save my money to go to the movies with my friends.

But I had lots of fun with "Confessions of a Shopaholic." There was nothing wrong about this film. It was a bit ridiculous at times but the jokes meant it in a way that I laugh. But the most important thing was that the movie had a pretty good message to each his own.

"Confessions of a Shopaholic" tells the story about a woman named Rebecca (Isla Fisher) who always dreamed of buying the most expensive fashion-style clothes. However, she gets interviewed by a News Magazine editor, Luke (Hugh Dancy), and Rebecca is very happy. She then starts buying too much stuff that it makes this one person named Derek Smeath want to stalk her when Derek is more likely telling her to spend her money wisely. Rebecca then needs to know what is the most important thing in spending your money wisely.

So here's how I spend my money wisely. FYI. If you love movies and you think it's expensive going to the movies, go to a local theater where it's $6.00. When I buy movies on Blu-Ray, it doesn't matter now where I buy them either at Best Buy or at Borders because I shop at an area where both places or right next door, depends on the sale price. I also would buy decaf coffee either at Starbucks or where at Coffee shop where it's $1. Honestly don't get me wrong, I don't mind Dunkin Donuts but the service is a bit slow. Most importantly, save your money on something that means very well to you that you know you would want.

Anyway, enough about saving money. Let's go with the extras. The second disc is a Digital Copy disc where you can download it to your computer or your iPod/iPhone. Other than that, the Blu-Ray shows a few interesting things like Deleted Scenes and a couple of featurettes.

Overall, enjoy "Confessions of a Shopaholic." It's worth seeing on Blu-Ray if you have a Blu-Ray player.

"Chick Flick, Evening's Entertainment, Frothy and Slight" 2009-08-22

If you are a man and reading this, run as fast as you can in the opposite direction if someone tries to make you watch this movie. It will be a woman who tries to conscript you for this, a girlfriend, your sister, maybe even your mother. Believe me, they will be the only ones to enjoy it and even they will forget it shortly after turning off the set. I certainly did. Even though less than 30 days have gone by, I am having trouble remembering the silly scenes in any detail. This is too bad in a way because Sophie Kinsella, author of the novel, is one of the freshest chick lit writers (from Britain) to hit our shores. Kinsella's novel writing about this charge card obsessed heroine was actually a lot droller, more satiric and more sharply observed than this movie version of it. Nevertheless, I did watch it until the end. This is because Isla Fisher is cute as heroine Becky Bloomwood. Plus having her write for a finance magazine when she is a financial disaster has its moments. Hugh Dancy plays her boss at the finance magazine and thus he is the romantic interest of the movie. As a romantic hero, he was good. So if you are a woman and want an evening's light entertainment, rent this on DVD or see as pay-per-view on your tv or your computer. That will be more than enough.

"Absolutely Stunning Series - Planet Earth Fans Will Enjoy!" 2009-08-30

Nature's Most Amazing Events takes you on a fantastic journey from the Artic to Africa.

The Great Melt: The collection starts off in Arctic with a primary focus on Polar Bears and Guillemots. If you've seen Planet Earth, you will be familiar with the Polar Bear activities, but the Guillemots were fantastic as we see the young taking their first flight and learning how to feed.

The Great Salmon Run: This takes place in the Pacific Northwest and follows the Salmon Run and the grizzly bears that depend on it. This was my favorite episode because I really enjoyed seeing how the Salmon travel so far and often up waterfalls to get to their birthplace. I also enjoyed the bears and their fantastic fishing techniques.

The Great Migration : This takes place on the Serengeti and features the migration of the Wildebeest and their predators. A special focus is on a lion pride and their struggle to survive while waiting for the migratory animals to return.

The Great Tide: The scene follows the sardines and their predators. The scale of sardines is amazing, as is the footage of the predators devouring them.

The Great Flood: The next to last scene takes us to the Kalahari during the flood. Planet Earth viewers will be familiar with the elements in this scene, but it's nice to see different scenes as well.

The Great Feast: The scene follows the may animals that are supported by herring feasting on the plankton.

The footage of birds,sea lions, and whales is amazing. In particular, we get a close up view of the whales eating a bait ball, and the scene is stunning. It was also interesting to see the whales together doing what is called "bubble fishing".

Nature's Most Amazing Events is a great series, and the camera work is stunning as I have come to expect since watching Planet Earth. Some of the footage may seem familiar if you've seen Planet Earth or other nature shows, but it doesn't detract from how well these scenes were shot.

David Attenborough does a great job of narrating the series, and each scene also has a "diary" that takes you behind the scenes and shows you how some of the camera work is done. I thought this was a great addition and enjoyed seeing these folks in action.

Each scene is about 45 minutes long and then has a 10-15 minute diary.

This DVD will go on the shelf right next to Planet Earth, Home, Ganges and Earth: Biography as part of my nature collection.

Fantastic series. By focusing in on these events the audience actually gets a better sense of the awesome process of nature than from the Planet Earth series. And the photography is even better. Lucky for us Yanks that British taxpayers subsidize productions like this, because there's no chance they're making a profit on the massive investment involved.

This is another wonderful series full of beautiful images and a wealth of information. The Blu-Ray release is a bit disappointing as it only includes the original narration by David Attenborough. With the space available on Blu-Ray I find this unacceptable!

Considering that Blu-Ray is pushing to be top dog in the video market, you would think they would want to include some enticing features and they have dropped the ball here somewhat. This release should have included the behind the scenes footage and both versions of the narrative. .....why not?

The picture and sound look very good here, but it's in 1080i?? Why not 1080p? It's just a shame this isn't as good as I expected it to be. I have recently bought a Blu-Ray player, but I'm not finding many stellar releases to purchase. I'm sure of time I will find some, but if you haven't bought a Blu-Ray player yet, there seems to be no hurry.

We attended a Jonas Brothers concert on this Burnin' Up tour. It was at the height of their appeal with my daughter and her friends. The show was spectacular, the girls had the time of their lives --- I even loved it, and I've seen a lot of concerts! So we had to see the movie when it came out. And we had to buy this DVD to relive the memories of a fantastic summer night in 2008. Some of the scenes that are not the concert footage are a bit goofy and contrived, but we bought it for the concert. Of course, nothing can recreate the actual concert experience, or even the 3D possible in theaters but not at home. Still, a worthy addition!

Even if you did catch the Jonas Brothers on their Burning Up Tour last summer (like I did), this is STILL worth the purchase. It's like reliving the surge of excitement over and over again. It never gets old. It's got tons of behind the scene stuff, plus it has 2 bonus songs which were NOT released in the theaters.

If you're a JB fan, and did NOT get to catch them on their Burning Up Tour, then I don't know what you're waiting for! ORDER THIS DVD and experience Kevin, Joe, and Nick up close and personal. Honestly, isn't that what EVERYYYYY Jonas Brother fan wants? :P

I gave this to my daughter for her birthday, and figured I would go blu ray with the 3D...hoping it would work. She watched it when she had a sleepover and they started out with the 3D version, but one of her friends had trouble with the glasses, so they went back to 2D. Although by that time they were half way through the movie. As they were watching it, I would hear all the girls singing to the songs and enjoying the movie. The next day she watched it in 3D and it was really neat how the 3D version worked. I expected some cheesy 3D stuff, but it looked excellent on the screen. Now, the whole movie doesn't play in 3D, so you end up taking your glasses off now and then. From what I saw, the 3D version works fine as do the glasses, I just think the one sleepover guest didn't want to bother with them.

My daughter said she would give it 4 stars as it was a good movie and she would watch it now and then, but it wasn't the greatest movie she ever saw (she would give Coraline the movie 5 stars!).

In all, I am still glad I got this movie, the Jonas Bros seem like good kids and role models and they sing okay and are decent to look at. As a mom, this movie won't annoy me, and I think my kids will enjoy it quite a few more times.

"Perfectly fine until I hit the third movie..." 2009-08-03

I was never a huge Underworld fan and never even bought the DVD, but when the trilogy set came out and went on sale I decided to get it for cheap.

I found the first two movies of the series to be at least entertaining and look nice, but Rise of the Lycans looked atrocious on my TV. Over half the scenes were extremely grainy--so much so that I can't even blame the cinematography. It definitely impacted my viewing experience.

I have contacted Sony to determine if this is a rare manufacturing issue, or if it looks that way on every disc, but in the meantime, beware.

"I would have rated movie higher, but........" 2009-07-30

I love a good majority of Mel Brooks movies, but what brings this movie down is the fact that John Candy stars in it. I don't know what there is about him, but I find him to be very annoying, and about as funny as a rubber crutch! I don't have a movie in my collection with John Candy in it. I think he was a very over rated comedian/actor. Rick Moranis shines through on this one. Supporting cast is up there as well. Bill Pullman proves to me that he can do different roles, playing a somewhat comedian role on Spaceballs. Somewhat humorous role in Lake Placid, and a serious role as president in Independence Day.

This is a great spoof off Star Wars. Mel Brooks has put out some real good movies in the past, and he always seems to get the right people to play the right parts. I remember seeing 2 of his great movies when I was in the service - Young Frankenstien, and Blazing Saddles. Blazing Saddles has been butchered when it was shown on network television with all the editing, so owning a copy of this classic is on my to do list. Spaceballs seems to be ok on network television, because it doesn't have the racial overtone that Blazing Saddles does. I recommend most of Mel Brooks movies. Even though I don't care for John Candy, I think Mel Brooks did well by putting him in this movie.

A runaway princess named Vespa (Daphne Zungia) with sassy robot maid Dot Matrix (Voice by Joan Rivers) is rescued by a stubborn but lovable space trucker named Lonestarr (Bill Pullman) with half-man half-dog alien companion Barf (John Candy) as they all join forces to learn the ways of the magical and mysterious Schwartz power from master Yogurt (Mel Brooks) and stop Dark Helmet's plans.

Excellent Sci-fi satire from co-writer, producer and director including actor Mel Brooks is one of the coolest and best comedies i've ever seen. I love how he makes fun of the Sci-fi genre with movies like "Star Wars", "Alien", "Planet of the Apes", "Star Trek", and other sci-fi movies of the time. The film co-stars Dick Van Patten as King Roland, George Wyner as Colnel Sanders, Michael Winslow and the voice of Dom Deluise as Pizza The Hutt even with a cameo by John Hurt. It's a great 80's cult favorite that provides the best laughs of the decade thanks to the magic of Mel Brooks and is always pure comedy gold.

This 2-Disc Blu-Ray offers the movie in beautiful high definition that it's not even funny even with quality sound that would make you go into luduicrous speed including a standard definition DVD of the movie. The extras including BD-exclusive which is "Watch the Movie in Luduicrous Speed", Trailers, Audio Commentaries, Film Flubs, Storyboard comparisons, interviews, Spaceballs: The Documentary, a memorial featurette on John Candy, behind-the-scenes footage and of course still galleries.

"SPACEBALLS THE BLURAY" 2009-07-17

Spaceballs is one of my all time favorite films and I eagerly awaited it's bluray release and even put in my preorder months in advance. Now that the bluray is here it is still one of my all time favorite films but i must admit the transfer is not demo material.

The transfer itself is solid and without any unnecessary tampering (digital noise reduction, edge enhancement, etc) and it is the best this film will probably ever look on home video however the film itself will never wow anyone with detail.

On the audio side we get a 5.1ch track that does it's job as well as the source material allows... just like the video it's not demo material but it's still a solid track. Also included is the original dolby stereo track along with a rather large collection of languages (and subtitles as well)

The bonus features are the same as the previous DVD edition, I haven't really dug into all of them but in Fox bluray tradition features that need a play all option (in this case the film flubs) don't get that much needed option.

The included DVD is the older flipper disc with the 4:3 pan&scan on one side and the non-anamorphic 1.85:1 version on the other.

I tried to watch the Blu-ray disc of this but it would not play at all. I think it might be a defective disc. But the standard DVD version worked fine. I played them both on my Blu-ray player. It is as funny and cheesy as I remember it. One of Mel Brooks's better later films.

Excellent movie, I liked this version of The Hulk better than other films of the Hulk.Edward Norton played the character well.

Lots of FX and well written story of what happens because of the experiments.

Also, there is a later scene where we see "Tony Stark" (Iron Man) in the movie making a reference to...

Wow, What Do I Say I Give this movie Four stars. This is one of my Favorite Motion pictures. I saw Hulk in theaters in 2003 and it was ok but this should have been number 1 in 2008. This is far better than Iron man and three times, no five times more entertaining than Spiderman 3 or the Dark Kight. This stars four great actors Edward Norton, Liv Tyler, William Hurt, and last but not least, Tim Roth. Box office, Beware, the Hulk is here and he is not happy. One more thing, this is also better than Batman Returns, Spiderman, Spiderman 2, and Hellboy 2.

I saw Dark City when it first came out in 1998 and believe it is a five star sci-fi thriller. Dark and colorful, it is another story of circumstances totally out of control masquerading as possible paranoid delusion. The ending reminded me of the Matrix, but it was very interestingly done.

It appears that the overused theme of an individual (or individuals) suffering from paranoia underwent an increase in usage in middle of the 90's in movies. Fortunately, it was pretty clear almost from the outset of the movie that this was not the case. The atmosphere of the film was dark, brooding and always troubling, until its Matrix like ending. John Murdoch is "the one"!

This film had absolutely terrific special effects, and featured some good performances of an interesting theme.

One of my first purchase of Blu Ray.

It's great to have both versions of the movie on 1 disc while I am not sure I'd recommend "The Director's Cut" to those first watching the movie. Feedback from friends whom I aired my Blu Ray version of this movie to was that the theatrical release seemed easier to comprehend with the narration. Director's seemed shorter... well, I guess it would be. I won't go into the story as most of you would probably already know.. as for those who don't others have more or less shared.

My take on Picture Quality would be fantastic! Audio is great!

Would I recommend that you get it? Absolutely... for the story and it's quality on Blu Ray.

Dark City is a film that will only grow with time, for not only is it a bottleneck work of art, but it's a transcendent film. Like 2001: A Space Odyssey, it transcends the limits of sci fi. Similarly, claims that the film is Gothic, noir, Expressionist, etc. are similarly shortsighted, as well are those which liken the film's narrative to Kafka or Orwell. The clear progenitor of this film is in fact Rod Serling, creator of the television show The Twilight Zone. But the film makes use of imagery from sources few have ever noticed- from campy predecessors in science fiction- the scene of Murdoch on The Strangers' wheel is highly derivative of the flying death scenes in Logan's Run, and the early scenes of The Strangers causing the city to sleep for a tuning, with cars in the middle of traffic jammed roads, is a steal straight from the opening scenes of Federico Fellini's 8½. This diversity, however, just proves a point I've long made, that greatness is a difference of kind not merely degree. Great films, and works of art, like Dark City, transcend their natal genres, and join a higher club, for they have more in common with the great films of other genres, than they do with lesser examples of their genre. And, the bottleneck status of Dark City also proves another point. German filmmaker Werner Herzog has long declared that our culture (cinematic or not) is currently starved for images, especially new images for a new age. I've never bought that, and a film like Dark City disproves Herzog's point. Images are always recycled, as are stories, and until mankind gets into outer space and experiences new things, now images are going to be relatively scarce. What I believe Herzog meant, however, was that the old images, stories, and ideas, need to be made re-new, and this is the essence of an artistic bottleneck- be it artwork or artist. The old is all filtered through that bottleneck and re-presented in new ways, mixed with new things, and, most of all, made better. As example, Shakespeare improved upon the dramatic archetypes of Greek tragedies, and the Modern Masters (Ibsen, Shaw, O'Neill) improved on Shakespeare's often one dimensional characters and fleshed them out, and set them in `real' situations, rather than the soap operatic melodramas Shakespeare could rarely transcend. It is quality, and quality alone, that is the important thing in any work of art, because that is a thing that is not ground to the subjective biases of individuals nor masses, not originality nor sentiment. And in these areas that define what makes a work of art work greatly, Alex Proyas's film Dark City transcends to that rarest circle, greatness, even as, within the limits of its genre it stands alone....nonpareil.

I hesitate in giving it 4 stars, but it really was remade perfectly. Keanu Reeves, while usually fine in this kind of sci-fi space, seemed muted in his performance, and that watered down the intent of the movie. It's the story line that came through for me. Completely addressing today's problems: us. I also like that who Klato really was would, "just frighten us", and that he had to be "born" here, in order to function on our planet. Little points like that made for realism. It's one of those movies that you'll want to own because you'll be wanting to watch over and over. Humanizing.

I have to concur with Mr. Asiner's review here, it's dead-on. As a fan of the original film, it's a natural tendency to compare a remake's integrity to the original story. This one comes up short with weak and implausible acting by most, and the screenplays "update" of Klaatu's mission based on Earth population's lack of stewardship of ecology has prompted an extra-terrestrial visit to eradicate the Earth of the carbon-based culprits under the guise of some inter-galactic "Do-over" for the Earth. When the remake was announced, I was surprised at Keanu Reeves as the choice for Klaatu. Never thought the taller half of the "Bill and Ted" adventures could pull this off, and I think that holds true. He was stiff, and absolutely no dimension to his character. Perhaps because Michael Rennie already had substantial acting credits to his name prior to making the original TDESS. This is what happens when a director is allowed to "interpret" something that was already a solid story in it's original form.

In 1989, I had the privilege of chatting with Robert Wise in an online forum sponsored by AOL. I took the opportunity to ask him if there was ever a plan to put together a sequel to the original TDESS. He told me that Ray Bradbury ("Martian Chronicles") had crafted a sequel to it, but it was not picked up by any of the studios. I now wonder what happened to Mr. Bradbury's screenplay sequel.

This one had the recipe for disaster that the "Lost in Space" big screen remake had. Another major "interpretive" failure. It's a shame when producers and directors take on these "remake" projects that they don't stick with what worked in the originals.

"IT COULD HAVE BEEN A CONTENDER..." 2009-08-24

I am a sucker for sci-fi movies and, having loved the 1951 Robert Wise classic of the same name, starring Michael Rennie in the role of Klaatu, I was ready to see what Keanu Reeves would do in that same role of intergalactic messenger. The answer is: apparently nothing. It was just Keanu being Keanu.

Robert Wise did more in 1951 with what he had to work with than Scott Derrickson had in 2008, which goes to show you that special effects alone do not make a film. Although it gets off to a promising start and the special effects are excellent, after the first half hour of the film it is strictly downhill.

The storyline is simple. Klaatu, an extraterrestrial, comes to Earth with his assistant on a mission. It appears that Earthlings have been observed by a superior species and found wanting. In the original 1951 film, the mission was clear. Klaatu lets the earthlings know that they need to clean up their act or they will be destroyed. In the 2008 remake, Klaatu's message is that he has actually come to destroy Earthlings, because we have been found wanting.

Jennifer Connelly, in the role of Dr. Helen Bensen, a supposed top-notch scientist, gets all weepy with Klaatu, begging for another chance. Moreover, the constant interjection of the cute kid, played by Will Smith and Jada Pinkett's son, is really annoying and adds very little to this muddle of a film. It probably would have been a better film, if the whole subplot involving this child were removed, as it only weakened the film with all its sentimental claptrap.

Meanwhile, Klaatu is left to ponder that age old question: just what is an Alien to do when confronted by a beautiful Earthling whose beautiful eyes well up with tears every time the Alien mentions killing off all of humanity? By now, everyone watching this film knows the answer, but Klaatu's last minute epiphany just does not ring true.

This film is an example of science fiction overlaid with a lot of sentimental hogwash. It ends up being much ado about nothing. Still, sci-fi fans, such as myself, will probably want to see for themselves what all the fuss is about. So, rent it before thinking of buying it.

"Can You Remake Perfection? No. But You Can Try..." 2009-08-23

My all-time favorite film, regardless of genre, has always been The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951). Director Robert Wise -- RIP -- was one of the few directors of his time who could pull off such a controversial film. Wise wasn't known for pulling any punches, regardless of the climate we were in. Examples of his stellar work can be seen all over his resume: West Side Story, The Sound of Music, and The Andromeda Strain, just to drop the names of a few of his more highly acclaimed films. I own just about every one of his films, including all the versions of The Day The Earth Stood Still (from Betamax to Laserdisc and now the Blu-Ray DVD release). I usually watch it a couple times a year, just to remind myself of just how good a film it was. The lighting. The clarity of the spaceship. The incredible challenge the story presented in a time when the threat of nuclear war loomed large. This is what great film making is all about.

So when I heard they were remaking my favorite flick, I screamed and my eyes went red. Can't Hollywood leave well-enough alone?! How could they possibly improve or even come close to the original? How do you improve or capture perfection when it's already sitting there staring you in the face? I refused to see it in the theater. And when film critics began pelting it with subpar reviews, I can't say I was surprised.

What did surprise me, however, was that when I saw it sitting on my local video store rental shelf, I actually picked it up and brought it home ...where it promptly sat for several days, staring at me, daring me to slide it into my DVD player. Fine. I did it.

What surprised me now was that I actually semi-enjoyed it. Not because it comes close to my beloved 1951 classic (it in no way does); but because it doesn't try to mirror the original completely and gives it a more modern spin, this time shifting from nuclear annihilation to environmental disaster.

Keanu Reeves (A Scanner Darkly) as Klaatu was probably not the worst choice for the role since he can play the flat affect pretty well. But his "dude" voice still came through to me on occasion and it grated. Jennifer Connelly (Blood Diamond) as Helen was another mediocre choice, not really engaging nor too put off-ish. Jaden Smith as Jacob would definitely not have been my first choice. He seemed over-the-top in his line delivery and I just couldn't picture him as the naive kid (Billy Gray did a much more believable job in the original 1951 film). Although I really liked Jaden in The Pursuit of Happyness (along with his father, Will Smith), I don't think he's quite ready to play such a role as this. He might get there someday, though.

The special effects were pretty darned nice, though, and it was a major boon for the production that Weta Digital Effects was involved. Nice visuals. The tough -- and now organic -- robot Gort was impressive and completely CGI'd. The menace that he portrays was equally good in comparison to the original, too.

So now the big question I ask myself is, "Should I have seen it on the big screen?" Hmm. Pondering that question now, I still have to say, "No." The original is the original is the original, in my book. It'll never be replaced, nor should it be. Trying to redo it doesn't diminish what the 1951 film was, but it's a shame that the higher ups at 20th Century Fox thought they could remake it and do anything remotely close to justice of the original. It just can't be done. But, as a stand alone film, this remake isn't too horrible. I've definitely seen much worse.

"Rent it. Maybe buy it." 2009-08-23

I loved the original and enjoyed this remake. I was particularly glad that the producers chose to portray Klaatu more in congruent with anything that we would have called polite sensibility, which was way over done in the original. Instead, I felt Klaatu's encounter with humans was more in keeping with what an encounter with a new sentient species might be like. Gort is awesome. He rocks. And it is so cool to see him adapt and change through the film to become part of the "final solution." I'd also like to add that I enjoyed seeing John Cleese perform as a Nobel Peace Prize winning scientist. This film leaves you with questions and a chance to dialogue about what you think really happened at the end. I like that a lot. This film delivers a very satisfying movie watching experience. Rent it. Maybe buy it.

THE SEASON

A lot of TV shows suffered from the writer's strike last season. Some, like Scrubs, had awful shortened seasons that seemingly cried out, "I give up!" Others, like Lost, went with the flow, and managed to deliver not only what fans expected (even if it was slightly different than originally planned), but some of the best work yet in the franchise.

Before the fourth season of Lost began, it was announced that the show would end after six seasons, with a definitive ending. (Or so they claim!) This timetable put the entire series of Lost into a scheduled progression, which the strike threw off. The result? Lost lost several episodes in the fourth season, but the talent of the writing staff managed to put out a slightly shortened season that still hit all the major points needed for the show to progress, even if we did lose out on some extra character progression and events.

The fourth season of Lost was big for more than being the first filmed with a set-in-stone finale in sight. At the end of season 3, Jack has a flash-forward, going against the previous structure (and identity) of the show. This continues in season 4, as characters no longer flash-back to their past and what they did before they got to the island, but flash-forward to (in some cases) life after the island.

This may seem like a cop-out in showing who will make it off and soliciting fan feedback, but in reality it actually greatly changed things. Why? Because some people don't make it off the island. Now, the story of Lost isn't the same ol' "How do they got off the island? Do they get off the island?" routine from the last three years, but instead, "Why does so-and-so not make it?" Do they stay around? Do they die? Does the group split even further, resulting in some escaping while they leave others behind? Suddenly, Lost regains a whole lot of depth that went missing after the relatively tame second year.

The story itself picks up right where season 3 left off, with the gang making contact freight ship crew just offshore, and a helicopter sent to pick them up. Obviously, things don't go according to plan as the freighters have their own agenda.

The usual twists and turns (and new character introductions) that fans expect from the series are in full force in season 4. Even though the post-strike episodes feel a bit more rushed and more compacted with events than the pre-strike ones, they still feel like Lost and manage to pacify fans, which is something many shows couldn't do in the WGA strike period. My only complaint about the season is that, compared to the previous three, the finale isn't nearly as big of a revelation. Then again, maybe that's part of a new direction for Lost, too.

THE BLU-RAY DISC

Lost Season 4 is called "the expanded experience" on the case, even though it's basically exactly what you saw on TV. That's not the only puzzling feature of the package, either. One of the Blu-ray specific features, SeasonPlay, allows you to keep track of where you are in the season and go directly back to that point. (Since, you know, Blu-rays don't save virtual bookmarks like DVDs.) Unfortunately, it rarely seemed to work as-intended. Another puzzling item is the episode selection menu. Pick that, and it asks you to select which disc you have in. But... shouldn't it be able to tell? The best part is if you accidentally pick the wrong one, it tells you to insert the right disc. Odd.

Those issues aside, Lost season 4 on Blu-ray is fantastic, and a great example for TV show releases in the future. Presented in 1080p instead of the HD broadcast's 720p quality, Lost on Blu-ray is noticeably better than Lost on TV; even on the HD channels. Colors are bright, the jungles of Hawaii (err-the "island") look fantastic, and the blacks are deep and foreboding. The show also offers one of those awesome-but-oh-so-rare 3D-like effects during the jungle scenes, where the picture is so clear you almost feel like you're there.

If I have one complaint, it's that the transfer may be too clear. Plenty of times, you can see makeup and such on the faces of the actors due to the high clarity. On one hand, it's a testament to the quality of the transfer. On the other, nothing takes you out of the moment and scene faster than noticing Jack has some foundation on his cheek.

The PCM 5.1 audio is also a great improvement over broadcast quality. Which is impressive, considering the broadcast quality of Lost's audio is already above just about all TV Blu-ray releases. Presented with full surround and in several languages, the score, ambient sounds of the island, and action of the occasional action break are very clear, bump quite well, and will please even the most hardcore of audiophiles.

The extra's list, like the previous seasons, is full of hours of goodies. Audio commentary on several episodes, a witty 8:15 recap of the previous Lost seasons, Lost on Location, Lost in Hawaii, the Right to Bear Arms, and the regular bloopers, outtakes, and deleted scenes make the bulk of the featurrettes list.

Exclusive to the Blu-ray version are SeasonPlay, which I've already mentioned, excerpts from a live performance of the fantastic Lost score by the Honolulu Symphony Pops Orchestra, and, my favorite feature, Course of the Future. Course of the Future combines the flash-forwards from season 4, and makes them-effectively-one future episode. While on the standard DVD release, on Blu-ray fans can follow specific characters, finding out what (so far) will happen with some of their favorites. Combined all of the flash forwards fill up an entire episode's timeslot, so it's quite an entertaining watch. Footage you've already seen? Sure. But fun to watch again without any switching back-and-forth between time periods? You bet.

FINAL WORD

Lost Season 4 on Blu-ray is, as I've already said, a pinnacle and shining example for TV on Blu-ray. The show's producers know how to film for the format, and it shows. An awesome video and audio transfer, some nice Easter eggs, and more make up the best Lost season 4 package available. While I would have loved to see more Blu-ray specific features, just having all the extras from the DVD in high-def format is enough of a bonus.

If you're a fan of Lost, buy this season on Blu-ray. And, if you're new to the series, season 4 is perfectly able to serve as a starting point thanks to the new flash-forward dynamic. So if your friend/loved one is watching it, feel free to jump in. Just expect to be hooked on the show like most of America, and join the long list with those of us asking for a Blu-ray release of the first two seasons to add to our collection.

I purchased the fourth season because I had missed a few of the episodes, because it is much easier to watch on dvd then watch the free episodes on the computer, and because the special features (few as they are) add to one's appreciation of the show. Although Lost continues to get more and more far out and stretch the imagination beyond belief, and to rely too much on violence, it is one of the most brilliant and engaging series on tv. It is also worth viewing twice because of all the subtle clues and connections buried within each episode. However once one has watched one season and moved onto the next, with a whole new set of twists -- the previous seasons become less interesting. Nonetheless I recommend this dvd to those who want to catch the details they missed during first time viewing, or who are watching the series for the first time. It is quite addictive.

"Can't take it anymore!" 2009-07-21

I loved this show for the first three seasons, but enough is enough. I agree with the person who says that the writers just make stuff up without taking anything from previous episodes into account. In seasons 1 through 3, the confusing plot was alleviated by the flashbacks; they gave you nice breaks where you could relax and get to know the characters better. Now, they have been replaced by "flash-forwards". So now we have to keep track of what's going on on the island, PLUS the stuff in the future, which involves a mysterious conspiracy of some kind (maybe, it's all very vague). Basically, this show has gotten too clever for its own good. They keep packing in more mysteries, more plot twists, and more characters (who in turn have more mysteries and plot twists in their personal stories). It's a shame, because I have always felt that the dialogue and acting on this show was very good. If I got the satisfaction of a loose end tied up even once in a while, I would probably keep watching, but they never explain ANYTHING. What I find most hilarious of all is that at the end of every season, the writers give interviews saying things like "Oh, the last season was very confusing, but just wait. Next year a lot of things will become clear." This always turns out to be bull. I'm sick of being strung along!

Urgency, drama, poignancy--all of which I hear in the Sinatra/Jobim bossa nova recordings (two albums plus a television special)--are replaced in this set by color, casualness, even a touch of "home-iness" (several singalongs). Of course, the latter are all illusions, as Krall is one of the best prepared, most tightly rehearsed, perfectionist artists in the business. Her piano chops are fine-honed to to the point of virtual flawlessness, if at the expense of some excitement and spontaneity. She'll never be a "stand-up vocalist," but she has worked hard enough on that facet of her talent to be one of the more compelling (though hardly virtuosic) voices in the music today. Perhaps Diana herself wishes to be taken less seriously as a vocalist than as a pianist--how else to explain her crossing her legs while singing a couple of the numbers?

Perhaps her most noteworthy achievement on this date is to make it all seem so relaxed, so easy, so natural (the "just-got-up," careless fall of the hair, the sleepy eyes, the intimate rapport with the audience--all this on a concert stage while surrounded by a hundred musicians or so--it's the mark of a supreme actress who knows how to play equally to the camera and the crowd but also the signature of a performer sufficiently talented to exude this much confidence.

By contrast, her steadfast team of Hamilton and Clayton look, if anything, somewhat nonplussed alongside Diana (though Clayton does his best to provide an ingratiating smile). Perhaps what I'm seeing is what happens to all of us after age 50 (I can recall few drummers who projected a more commanding presence than Jeff Hamilton driving the Woody Herman Herd). No doubt Buddy Rich and Ray Brown were the exceptions--both seemed to register increasing confidence and unflappable supremacy with each passing year.

Guitarist Anthony Wilson, as the only other melodic voice of note, is especially key to the "jazz" interest of the group, though his rapidly ascending patterns occasionally get lost in the translation. Hand-drummer, Paulhino Da Costa, is gracefully balletic to look at, though his sonic contributions, at least on my system, are often hard to pick up. The orchestrations are worlds apart from a Nelson Riddle or Johnny Mandell but at least manage to avoid sounding intrusive or schmaltzy.

The only "life" in the proceedings occurs with the introduction of the Nat Cole Trio numbers. A couple of misfires, at least to my ears' perception, are "Too Marvelous for Words" (Johnny Mercer certainly had nothing in mind like this soporific version, which is tantamount to replacing love-struck wonder and speechlessness with a sentiment more like "words require too much effort to express your attractiveness") and "Walk On By" (which, with its repetitious and constricted melody combined with a deadpan delivery, sounds stolid--even a bit like martial music--"March on By"?).

Nonetheless, this is undeniably highly listenable, pleasant music. More questionable is whether it's worth the expense of time, attention, and cost of a Blu-ray edition. Despite the lovely interspersed shots of Brazilian life, there's not much to look at--unless you can't get your fill of Ms. Krall's admittedly handsome features. Moreover, the hi-definition is, at best, inconsistent. As mentioned, the audio is less than stellar, and the available light shots of the audience in the dark auditorium are mostly all grain (visual "noise" photographers call it). The cutting (from shot to shot) ranges from curious to disorienting (at a couple of points making the featured performer look like she's doing a ventriloquist act when the words suddenly show no synchronization with lip movement). Better to pick up the CD and let your mindscreen provide the pictures. (Tip: Don't overlook the "bonus" tracks shot in a hotel lounge with just vocal, guitar, and Hamilton playing brushes on his lap--in many respects, it's more satisfying than the big show.)

Good to know there is new music show material in the Blu-Ray format but you won't get so much satisfaction when you discover that two different kinds of equipment were used to record image in this 'Live in Rio'.

Obviously the images that show the audience are very poor what makes us think that special equipment for Blu-Ray was used only for Ms.Krall on stage. What kind of economy was aimed at? This causes a big discomfort to watchers. Maybe this bad effect does not show in DVD format.

Images taken from Rio de Janeiro were also top quality. Rio de Janeiro is a beautiful city and the disc should offer an extra image bonuses considering the Blu-Ray product. I am Carlos from Rio and I mean what I say. The few takes of the City of Rio de Janeiro and the poor image variety give us the impression that the gasoline budget was tight.

The rest is Ms. Krall as usual: a mid-Jazz pianist as a promise, who decided to be a mainstream singer of standards which have been covered extensively and well by so many great artists.

Although the show was live in Rio, the Bossa Nova home town, Ms. Krall's and her trio's best peformance was their 4x4 rendition of Irving Berlin's 'Cheek to Cheek'. The repertoire follows the track of her recent sleepy Bossa Nova album. Most of the time the show is sleepy too.

Oh I can't forget to tell you that Ms. Krall is a beautiful woman. This should be remarked, considering the product is a Blu-Ray disc.

Better than the first one and the credit for that goes to Steve Martin because the script is not very good.

I'm a big Steve Martin fan and I have been trying to figure out why Martin does not excel in this role. In theory I thought he should. He's smart and funny. What else do you need?

After watching the second one though, I realized what has been bothering me. The essence of Clousseau is that he is totally not self aware. Steve Martin however is very self aware. A large part of his comedy act was a success because we were partners in Martin's self aware approach to bizarre comedy. Martin enjoys being watched, and shines when he is watched, a concept that is alien to the character of Clousseau.

If Martin keeps doing this role, he will keep getting better because he is very smart and he is a very hard worker, but he'll never master it. It takes a different kind of personality to do Clouseau well.

Before you scream how dare I not give this classic 5 stars, lets get the good parts out of the way. Great video transfer, excellent color and crispness for a movie of the time. All the wonderful music and cinematography are still there. Loved seeing it at full aspect ratio as well. Performances are still excellent (at times). Audio quality is just okay, occasionally seemed a bit muddy but a lot of that is just the reality of a 1967 movie. They ugly part is that they restored all the original footage cut for US release. Normally, that'd be a good thing, and the purists will love it, and I was really looking forward to seeing the entire movie as the director intended but good god this movie now meanders. The tight, tense, character driven storyline is greatly weakened. It builds energy, then gets sidetracked on some pointless exposition for 10 minutes. It tries to jump back into the story, only to lose its focus again. The tone changes scene to scene. Some of scenes seem to be misguided attempts at comedy, others are incongruously melancholy. All of that could be made to work, but it doesn't. It just leaves big weak spots all over spilling out into what would be otherwise great performances. With a limited budget and tight focus, Sergio Leone is unmatched. With a big budget (for the time), as much dialogue as he wants and no one to stop him, he's just okay. There's a great 90-110 minute movie here, lost between footage best left on the cutting room floor.

I will preface this review by admitting that this is one of my favorite films of all time. I fell in love with this movie when I was a kid, watching it on a 13" black and white tv. Given that this is a movie that needs to be watched in "widescreen", it tells a lot about how wonderful the story is that this film can be enjoyed on even the worst of presentations. As the years have gone by, I have been able to watch this film in better visual circumstances: videotape in color, dvd on a widescreen, "restored" dvd on a larger widescreen, and now finally in Blu-Ray on a HD tv. The film has lost none of its magic for me, (I have come to realize that this is more of a fantasy film than a western). I appreciate how the moral tones of the story are much more subdued as compared to the "black/white- good/evil" storytelling of earlier westerns. The camera work in this film is so unique: we are presented with vast expanses of hilly terrain with a barely visible rider on a horse, to extreme facial/eye close-ups with insects darting around the actors face. The story is humerous at times- with both physical and verbal comedic elements, as well as sad- with extremely deep emotional scenes regarding life, death, and the value of both. The scene where Tuco confronts his brother in the Abby remains to this day, upon countless viewings, very powerful to me. In my opinion it is the most dramatic scene in the film. It is when we realize that these characters are multi-demensional- and cannot be pegged as just "Good, Bad, or Ugly". We as humans are all three.

Then there is the music. Ennio Morricones score is as much of a character in this film as any of the actors. It is pure magic.

So, is the Blu-ray worth the upgrade? In my opinion: Yes. I had reservations as to how much improvement could be made to this film. I can tell you that, while this film will never look as good as films made today, it actually looks better than my dvd version, which itself was restored. It looks clean, with very fine film-grain. I would say that if you have a blu-ray player and an HD tv, and you really do love this film, it is worth the upgrade.

The characters are not believable, the hero gets cut a vast amount of slack for what would be unacceptable behaviour in any flying school in the world, and what did the girl see in this guy, anyway? Strictly for people who think that being cool is all about breaking rules and not caring about others. It's very 1980's in attitude, and it shows.

Whatever passes as story and characters that they put as padding between the flight scenes are so embarassingly formulaic and stupid that I was soon hitting fast forward every time until jets were scrambling again. Apart from the "last fight" scene which is spoiled by terrible missile hit SFXs, the air scenes are stunning in HD. That photography really makes this disc great. That's my first movie purchase that made me fully satisfied of switching to Blu Ray. You've GOT to have a serious sound system hooked on your player too.

"Beautiful." 2009-08-10

Yes, the BD version definitely delivers.

As for the film itself, most of you probably have seen this film or some of his other work... so I won't comment much on the film, but rather the technical aspects of this film. I mean, a knight plays chess with Death, what's not to like about that?

Stunning image quality and sound. It's actually been a while since I've seen an older version, though I think it wasn't even the old Criterion edition. What I can attest to is that, like "Repulsion", the transfer is simply incredible. There is absolutely no way short of a projection of the film itself that will deliver like this one. The subtitles appear to have been modified a little, being translated probably better for today's modern age. The extras are not extensive, but a nice addition to the BD version of the film. Also included is a nice booklet with the film. It could be considered a "collectors" booklet, as it is nicely put together and informative... but to me it's just something that Criterion added as a bonus. Very nice, though.

Bergman's exposures and lighting come through so beautifully in every frame. There are some scenes that come across as "flat" but that has nothing to do with the Criterion transfer and was more than likely on the master print itself. I think this could have been adjusted slightly to get rid of the prominent grays, but it could have been Bergman's intention as well... that I'm not sure about, but it was certainly in the original film. What's gone from the original is a hissy, poppy audio track and there's not a single hint of dust or scratches anywhere. Amazing what Criterion has been doing with these old prints!

Keep in mind the aspect ratio is 4:3, (the ratio of what was previously the standard for TVs), not 16:9. It was common for films of that era to be presented in it's full frame form... if you have a projector setup or large enough widescreen television, don't worry it hardly distracts at all.

Also, you'll be glad to know that Criterion was smart enough to eliminate those ugly blue cases that most BDs are packed in. They have more specially made cases that are clear and just a couple millimeters deeper (the spine, presumably to make more room for the booklets). Much more attractive on your DVD case than a row of neon-blue cases.

A breathtaking transfer of a classic film and the extras are fantastic. Criterion is sometimes stingy with the extras but they more than make up for it here. 'Bergman Island' alone is worth the purchase price. After I watched the Swedish-language original I even dipped into the English dubbed soundtrack which was surprisingly good. One of my best purchases of the year!

If you're reading this, I assume that you know what you're looking at, so I'll spare you the plot synopsis.

The transfer, in a word, is brilliant. It is stunning to see such vivid detail in a film that was previously veiled in murk. (on VHS anyway) There is a LOT of grain, but as I understand it, this was a conscious decision by Criterion. Rather than artificially reduce the amount of grain, they left it intact to preserve the "original" state of the film. It was a bit off-putting at first, but I got used to it quickly, and I think it was absolutely the correct decision.

The film is a marvel from start to finish, and the wide shots in particular are nothing short of beautiful. The detail you can see in the waves of the ocean or the leaves of the forest is astounding. The sense of realism and weight that is given to the actors/costumes/settings via the level of detail is truly revelatory as well. The sound is crisp and clean, although I'm admittedly not a serious audiophile. Really though, it's the visual brilliance that will stop film nerds in their tracks. This is reference level stuff.

If you are a fan, this version of the film is worth every penny. I haven't yet delved into the extras, but the fantastic transfer of the feature alone is worth the purchase.

So Wil Smith is excellent as always, and the character of Doctor Kelvin is pretty cool (can't remember who plays her, but at least they don't alter her basic nature too much.) The plot could have been really good - part of the tragedy of this movie is how much potential it had - but the production went for big kabooms instead of any sense of realistic action. The quest for a bigger, badder action scene absolutely ruined this movie. They might have followed the three laws and used plot elements form Asimov's book, but they threw the basic laws of physics out the window and made the whole set-up "too stupid to live" for the sake of shiny effects instead of playing it straight.

All in all, I kind of thought it was going to suck, and I wasn't wrong.

I was interested to see how they would turn Asimov's book in to a Will Smith vehicle. The actual way they did it was not that bad. They kept a few characters from the book and the three laws of robotics, and then went wild. In that its not all the bad. It successfully presents many of the themes and concerns that Asimov had in his stories and extrapolates further on them. There are various event that were taken verbatim from the stories in the book.

The big problem I had was with the execution of the movie. The story seemed to jump around with very little character development or explanations as to why things were happening. At the movies conclusion, I was still left somewhat confused as to what ultimate outcome was intended. With a little more attention to the story and characters, this could have been a very good action movie. Instead it seems that the 'glue' was cut to make more room for action sequences.

"Logic itself is incomplete" 2009-07-10

I find it a little hard to describe why I like I, Robot so much. I feel drawn to the movie again and again. In a certain fashion, this is typical of the work of Alex Proyas, the director of I, Robot. Alex Proyas is probably best known for directing The Crow (Miramax/Dimension Collector's Series), with Brandon Lee, the ill-fated son of Bruce Lee. The Crow is a cult classic, loved by goths the world over, and its cachet is only increased by the untimely death of Brandon Lee during filming of the movie. Proyas also directed Dark City (Director's Cut) [Blu-ray], a lesser cult film, but a cult film nonetheless, and also one of my favorites. Proyas apparently has a knack for this kind of thing.

I like I, Robot, even though in a certain sense I find its premise intrinsically implausible. That is because I am generally a fan of the Lucas-Penrose argument for the impossibility of creating an artificial intelligence by means of a computer algorithm (meaning a Turing machine more generally). Refutations of this argument often verge on the comical, because they are often forced to end up insisting that humans cannot reason, either. Part of the problem here is that Lucas is a philosopher, and many (most?) scientists and mathematicians haven't got any clue what he means by "reasoning". Reasoning, as he means it, simply cannot be an entirely physical phenomenon, as argued by Aristotle in De Anima. I am on record in public (admittedly a small public) as predicting that A.I. in the strong sense is impossible for precisely this reason.

Nonetheless, I have no issue with the kind of robots portrayed in I, Robot, because if machine intelligence is possible, it will be something like what you see in this movie. If you create a machine that can reason, then by necessity it will be able to choose good or evil of its own free will. You just might not like the result.

One of the few parts of I, Robot that actually conforms to Asimov's collection of short stories is the Three Laws of Robotics. Asimov created the Three Laws to break the mold of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein on artificial life stories, but Proyas' version of I, Robot restores this fear to the plot.

This fear is driven by the truth that logic, like justice, is cruel. None of us really look good in the harsh light of justice; no one can live up to their own principles. Logic is not much better; few of us can follow our principles to their logical conclusions. As Dr. Alfred Lanning says in response to question, "Is there a problem with the Three Laws?", "The Three Laws are perfect." There is only one logical conclusion, and robots, by definition, are logical. Even classical philosophies such as Stoicism would be unable to embrace that blunt conclusion.

Asimov actually toyed with this idea himself, as the Zeroth Law of Robotics: A robot may not injure humanity, or, through inaction, allow humanity to come to harm. This is the same logical deduction made by VIKI, the malevolent mainframe. Thus, it is not surprising that we fear logic, because logic inexorably leads to our collective perdition. The deeper reason for this is that logic itself is incomplete, especially when expressed in natural language. Any mathematics complex enough to include arithmetic must include an unprovable statement, in the sense that it cannot be deduced from within the system itself. Steve Sailer once noted that contracts are written in something like COBOL. The intent of this is to reduce uncertainty about what the contract actually means. Legalese accomplishes this goal fairly well, but you cannot reduce the uncertainty to zero, because words do not possess absolute definitions, a point made by Fr. Stanley Jaki OSB. Any time spent with a lawyer will prove this assertion to your satisfaction.

This unsuspected philosophical subtlety surprised and pleased me. Even more so because I, Robot seems like an action movie, and a fine one it is. Shooting killer robots, like shooting zombies, never really gets old.

There were lots of amazing quotes you can learn in this movie, and was somewhat entertaining despite the omission of romance which most movies insert to keep people engaged. I know that Clive Owen is always the heroic bad ass void of emotions, but he plays it so well!

There are so many things wrong with this movie that it is hard to know where to begin.

Clive Owen plays the same character, in the same trenchcoat, that he has been playing for some time now, and much better than here. His 'smoldering' rage barely offsets Naomi Watts emotionally passive affect through 3/4 of the movie.

The international intrigue of the movie is like a boilerplate script that we have all essentially seen over and over again in the last 8 years.

The directing is horrible. Emotionally detached, though with the intent of drawing us into these international settings, there is no gravitas of any real character development throughout the environments until the very end, and then it is still washed out through a waste of good actors.

If you want a great international intrigue movie, then rent Casino Royale, one of the greatest movies ever made, and then watch all three Bourne movies.

If you want someone's washed out and limp homage to those movies, then watch this one.

I really wanted to like this film, I really did. However, there's really no saving grace for this film besides Clive Owen's acting, great cinematography, an original plot, and an outstanding shootout sequence. I have never seen a film so devoid of life. There is no humor, barely any action, and the dialogue is overly complex, bland, and lifeless. I wasn't expecting a shoot-em-up thriller like Taken or even the 007 films, but I was expecting a smart yet entertaining thriller. 'The International' does manage to be smart, but TOO smart, to the point where it is just not an enjoyable film. However, if you enjoy a very intelligent political thriller with much of the plot advancing through dialogue, then 'The International' may be your type of movie.

On a side note, the picture and audio quality is great. Not the best, but very impressive.

"The International" is a swift-paced thriller with a great scene in a famous New York City building. Interpol agent Louis Salinger (Clive Owen) and Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Eleanor Whitman (Naomi Watts) are investigating an international bank, headquartered in Luxembourg, that is involved in a catalogue of illegal activities ranging from money laundering and arms trading to the backing of coups in unstable third-world countries. Anyone who knows too much about the bank's operations and any law enforcement officer who gets close to digging up proof of the bank's clandestine activities are quickly eliminated by the bank's highly trained, lethal hit team.

A highlight of the movie is a dazzlingly filmed shoot-out in Manhattan's Guggenheim Museum, which is staged spectacularly. A key meeting at a climactic point in the film is to take place at the museum, and Salinger and his New York team are about to close in when all hell breaks loose and the art repository turns into a shooting gallery, with good guys, bad guys, and unknown guys with automatic weapons running up and down the museum's famous ramps as art patrons cringe, bullets fly, art is defaced, and blood splatters. This is one of the best action sequences I've seen in a movie in many a moon.

Blu-ray extras include deleted scenes, a making-of featurette, another featurette explaining how the Guggenheim sequence was planned and filmed, and director commentary. A digital copy of the movie is included with the Blu-ray edition.

"Huge build-up to a lot of nothing" 2009-07-08

Sword of the Stranger is an action movie. The movie takes itself seriously. And despite this being the directors first movie, the attention to detail with the environment prevents it from feeling like a static world. The very limited amount of humor present helps to keep the mood right for the film, but could turn some away. The level of gore is high at times, but not so bad you can't look.

Like most action films, there is a story. And like most action films it isn't the most memorible story. However, the animation quality and the music are great. The Japanese voice actors do an excellent job. Some fan favorites from live-action were casted for major roles. And the young boy that did the voice for the youngest character is spot on. Despite the story not grabbing me like other movies recently, there is a point and there is some character development. The treatment of the Chinese forces present in the film is not in the best light (as expected with Japan). But, interestingly the characteristics that the Japanese characters show are not any better.

Even though I have high praise for this movie, it simply doesn't have much more to offer on blu-ray than with DVD. The picture quality is not vastly improved. It doesn't look bad, it just doesn't look much better than on DVD. That is the only reason I have given this 4/5 stars and not 5/5.

There's not much I can add to the already great reviews. I will say that there is no sexual content. There is a brief nude scene but not much is shown. I'll also add that young children should not watch this only because there is a lot of blood, limbs cut off and one scene of torcher. But really this is an absolutly spectacular movie. It's well worth the money, good story line and for a change, the story does end quite decently, it doesn't just let you hang there wondering what the hell happened or will happen. Hope this very short review was helpful. For another sectacular anime series that's well done and worth seeing check out Samurai 7.Samurai 7: Box Set (Viridian Collection)

"Sword of the stranger" has a very real feel to it unlike many other Anime or rather 'toons' out there - for starters the characters are likable and very believable whereas anime such as Ninja Scroll centered on the mythological demons, and creatures genre. The animation is raw (meaning the background) the character development is excellent, be that as it may I found the Designs a little off i.e. one of the samurai's arms were to long, and "No-Name" barely had any muscle tone you figure if one is a samurai and carries a sword everywhere he's going to look like he's at least halfway healthy) but i will let that slide because that's the style "Unique" would be the word for this movie, it almost has a Disney-anime-lone wolf and cub hybrid feel to it) and here's to hoping they make a sequel to this, or something like this in the future - I really did not know what to make of this movie at first but after watching for awhile i really started to get into the characters. Intense action (gory at the beginning)believable drama, awesome backdrops and the fight at the end has to be seen to be believed, not saying it is the best sword fight scene in all anime but it is up there. Easily the best Anime out this year no contest. Buy IT.

Okay, I had very high hopes for this movie. The previews made it look funny and great, boy were they wrong! First off, the intro may seem actiony.... if you're a 5 year old. We all know that this action sequence is part of the tv show, we know that because in the trailer it said that he was a tv dog. The beginning sequence just seemed like it dragged on and on. When he finnaly gets out into the real world, he meets a cat named Mittens and a hampster named Rhino (Who is the only humor in the movie). It just seems like this drags on and on. It was boring in every single way! My parents were watching this with me, and we kept looking at each other thinking "Um, when is it going to get good?". Finally, we get a good REAL action sequence where Bolt saves Penny from a fire. This is the only part of the movie that was touching and had me crying. After that, the ending just showed how pathetic the TV studio was (They tried to do a new epi of the Bolt TV show with a new dog and girl. Epic fail btw) And the cat and hampster end up getting adopted by Penny which was sweet even though you can see it coming a mile away.

What happened to you Disney? You had great films, and now this. This film was as boring as Night at the Museum, and what's worse, they had to cast freakin Miley Cyrus to play Penny, not only that but they use some of her songs! UGH! Also, they stole the plot, from one of their own movies! They stole the TV Dog going into the real world plot from 101 Dalmations 2: Patch's London Adventure (Great Movie). Honestly, stealing your own plots, making boring movies, creating Hannah Montana?! Walt is probably rolling in his grave.

Oh, but it gets better! In the mini movie, Super Rhino, Rhino the Hampster has a dream that he now has super powers and has to save Penny and Bolt. It got a couple snickers out of me, but the end is a WTF moment. After he saves Penny and Bolt, Rhino takes an elevator the leads to a stage where he starts singing "The Best of Both Worlds" by freakin Hannah Montana! WTF?! Disney, why the heck are you advertising your lame sitcoms during a mini movie! I just can not get over that!

I'm sorry Disney, but only a couple snickers thanks to a hampster, and one touching moment out of 130 minutes is not going to cut it. If you want a fun, funny, and actiony family flick, go see Monsters Vs Aliens.

Please do not rent or buy this movie. I rented it and I wished I had that 7 dollars back after half an hour into the movie. Disney, you can do better!

This is a Disney animated dog tale that has the voices of John Travolta (Bolt), Miley Cyrus (Penny), Susie Essman (Mittens), Mark Walton (Rhino) and Chloe Moretz.

A puppy is adopted by a child star by the name of Penny. She evidently went to the pet shop with the casting director for a TV show about super-dog hero Bolt.

Penny and Bolt make a great duo and the TV Show is a hit. We soon realize that Bolt is delusional about what super feats he can do. He is kept isolated and brought out of his star trailer only when they need to shoot scenes for a show. He is a great actor because he believes everything he does is real, including fantastic feats and dog power - down to an amazing bark that shakes or blows away everything around him. He does not realize it is all special effects. In his mind, he is "Bolt - the Super Hero Dog".

The story gets interesting when Bolt escapes into the real world. Bolt escapes his trailer chasing movie cats - and somehow ends up in a packing box and arrives on the East Coast. A cross country adventure starts with Mittens the homeless cat and Rhino the Hamster that loves TV shows. They have a wonderful adventure when they help Bolt come back to his owner and co-star Penny.

It is a fun filled story and the characters and animation are perfect.

I would like to watch this movie with my Mom Yang Gao Zedong and my Daughter Julia AR named after an 1860s German Princess of Saxe Coburg and Julia Morgan Californias first Lady architect. Great voice acting, Stunning graphics. But we're never given much of an explanation for how the world came to be like World of Warcraft's Outland and why the dragon looks like something straight out of Northrend.

It is PG though, I would be wary for wee little ones, towards the end of the movie there was a couple of possible "scarey" scenes, but my 3 year old was fine with it. I am going to recommend this movie to everyone!!!

I usually hate it when people write something that isn't a review in the review section, but I'll make an exeption for this. Think about this, in the commentary for The Fellowship of The Ring, Peter Jackson comments on the fact that he would like to, at some stage, redo the Gollum shots in that film to make him line up with the design in the other to films, as the design changed for the other two movies. What if this the reason for the extended edition blu-ray delay? This is pure speculation, but what if they are redoing the Gollum shots, so he'll match the "new and improved version" and perhaps even the design they using in "The Hobbit" for the prologue, and other effects shots they weren't happy with for the blu-ray release? That would shut everyone up. Or at least some of you.

And to everyone saying it's just about greed, I didn't here anyone saying that when the extended cuts where released several months after the theatrical cuts on DVD, how is this any differnt? It's easy, if you don't want it, don't buy it. No ones holding a gun to your head. We all know the extended cuts will eventually make it to blu-ray, so why insult these amazing films by giving them a poor score because you can't just be patient?

Another solid release from one of metal's premier bands. The concert and film are very good but I see them more as something for new fans of the band. Nothing new for older fans who've been following them for a while. But, if you're a diehard fan, this release is a must have.

This is an INCREDIBLE Blu-ray.

For mere 15 dollars, you get an amazing movie documenting the latest tour of the band, and more important, documenting the true love that this band has from its fanbase, specially here in South America. This movie is fun, exciting and endearing!

Besides the documentary, there are also 16 full songs, which are shown for one or two minutes during the movie but are available full on a separate part of the disc. On the DVD edition you have to change discs (1 for the movie and 1 for the concert) but on Blu-ray it is all in one single disc, with GREAT picture and GREAT audio qualities. Iron Maiden has many live DVDs and discs, but in my opinion this beats them all, since the quality is so high and the set-list is just PERFECT (16 of theyr best tracks from earlier days).

As a Brazilian and an Iron Maiden fanatic (I attented 2 of the 16 concerts shown on this disc) this has been the purchase of the year. Even if you are not such a hardcore Maiden fan, it is still worth it just to add to your Blu-ray collection, since image and sound are really sharp and the band is at its best, (even though they are way over their 50's). GET IT NOW!!!

Dont get me wrong the concert performance is great for the most part. I noticed during several songs bruces vocals just lacked authority. I saw them in concert in 85 and it was the same thing the vocal mixing could have been turned up a notch or so. I didnt care much for the footage of the band off stage, it just didnt seem relavent. The only thing that is totally cool is Bruce piloting that 757, it really disproves the notion that metal bangers are drug users. the highlight of the concert for me was Rime of the Ancient Mariner, the band just seemed really tight.

id recomend this blu ray to anyone just note that bruces vocals are weak compared to the studio versions

While I liked the original crew from the first movie and a lot of the action, something about this fourth entry in the series makes me want to watch the first one instead.

Maybe it's some of the absurd notions (a container truck pulling four fully loaded fuel trailers? c'mon...) or the almost stupid spoon feeding (which criminal is the tuner? Let's see, regular car, regular car, regular car, tuned up car with illegal mods, regular car...oh, how about the tuned car?) but something about this movie made me hate it more than the first.

After all, you can't say it's because the actors were different...or the director...or the locale...or the cars...pretty much the same thing going on here. Maybe it's a sign that cookie-cutter movie making isn't entertainment or at least it's not something that'll excite you as much as the racing usually does.

The second movie was ridiculously asinine. The third (Tokyo Drift) was definitely fun though that was largely because the drifting was crazy. But, in the end, the first movie had all sorts of things going for it.

Now, that doesn't mean you won't get something out of this movie. I'm saying you need to decide where your loyalties are. If you loved the first movie more than the last two, then you're safe...buy it and enjoy. If you liked the other two as well, then coming back to this one might not be the homecoming you're expecting. Still, something relatively new and in the F&F universe is better than nothing at all.

I didn't expect to enjoy this movie as much as I did but I gotta admit- I really enjoyed it! Vin Diesel looked great! Paul Walker looked OLD! The cars were cool, the races suspenseful, the girls were superficial, the cops were really DUMB and the story was okay. Put it all together, and somehow this film was fun. I watched this with my teenage daughter and she loved it too- even the goofy parts that made no sense, even when we solved the case before the cops did. This is why you watch this film: Vin's muscles, the shiny cars, the pulsing synthesizer house music, the bubble boobed mini-skirted chicks, the ridiculous story- we were hypnotized. Just sit back, relax and have fun.

Fast and Furious takes all the hollywood garbage spunoff from the original film and completely demolishes it. This movie is even more badass than the first. The move is serious, and the acting 100000's better. Apparrantly everyone has been working on their acting skills over the past few years. The only thing I hated about this movie was that the one character I brought the film to watch doesn't last too long. O-well the movie is based around them. This movie has plenty of action, and it's not cheesy. There are no more "Granny shifting and double clutching" phrases in this movie. There is nomore "happy go lucky" street racer feel that 2Fast 2Furious gave off. This movie is series. Matter of fact this should have been the sequel to The Fast and The Furious. The one thing that suprised me about the film was how much the characters had developed. In the original movie they were all sort of "cartoony". That entire vibe is lost in this film. Like I said this is the Batman Begins of The F&F series. We go back to the roots of it all, and this time we do it right. There cars are there, but the story is focused and intense they are almost camaflauged into the plot. There is plenty of action, to watch, and not that "lets jump over the bridge" garbage from 2F&2F. This is probably the best F&F to date. I'm also guessing the last as well. It was a great way to end the series!

Pixar movies are always well made. Unlike some people, I can accept that rats cook food...it's an ANIMATED film! What bothered me was the two scenes of violence, especially Granny with the shotgun.

Otherwise I thought it was a lot of fun to watch with kids who love to eat interesting and exotic food, or for that matter, a good way to get picky eaters introduced to flavors and trying new things.

The flashback sequence with Anton Ego (eating Ratatouille) was so well done it wouldn't have been out of place in a feature film.

But that violence really bothered me. It's a "G" movie after all! That's why I'm rating it 3 stars instead of 4.

Oh my - I didn't give a Terminator movie five stars like the last two. Have I lost my mind? No, I have good reason for this. First off, this is my least favorite film of the series. It took the uplifting message the first two carried and squashed it like a bug. Not only that, but there is a love interest that appears to be put there just because the series needed one. From a plot standpoint, Arnold is he ONLY thing that saves this movie. The T-X Terminator he fights is a female and I have no problem with that, but within the first few minutes of the movie, you find that she is put in there for sexual appeal alone and that kind of stuff just makes me mad.

From a Blu-Ray standpoint, I don't know really what to say. Oh wait - yes I do: beware. There are actually two different Blu-Ray versions of this film. One is in 1080p, while the other isn't. While Amazon does indicate the differences, make sure you pick the 1080p if you want to go true high-definition. Also, compared to T2: Skynet Edition, they took a step back. There are only expected extras (interviews and commentaries). It looked to be rushed and ported just because the other films were out on this format already. All in all, a disappointment, but no horrible by any means.

Years after Terminator 2, John Conner (Nick Stahals) is a loner for his mother was presumed dead when she left him later as he matured. However he is still having bad dreams about judgment day even from the stuff his mother told him years ago as now The Terminator (Arnold Schwartzenegger) is back as he's reprogamed to protect John Conner yet again and another bad terminator who is a female terminator with the qualities of the first two Terminator villains named T-X (Kristianna Lokken) is set to kill John and future wife Kate Brewster (Claire Danes) so it could set up judgment day including the rise of Skynet.

Co-starring Earl Boen who played Dr. Silbermen from the first two movies and David Andrews, this is the weakest installment of the franchise which doesn't have the magic of the first two movies from James Cameron. Miss Lokken is quite sexy as the new villain but is no match for the deadly villains of the first two movies even the T-1000, Jonathan Mostow who directed "Breakdown" and "U-571" is in place of Cameron for this installment does offer some good action sequences and decent acting but it's quite flawed even with some of the corny humor thrown in. It's nowhere as good as the first two movies but still a fun entry including the new one.

This 2-Disc Special Edition DVD has great extras like audio commentaries, interviews, trailer, featurettes, an HBO making-of documentary, intro by Arnold, gag reel, build your own action sequence feature, storyboards, datebase files on characters including history of the film franchise, deleted but funny Sgt. Candy scene and of course behind the scenes of the T3 video game.

Once again the members of the Academy did not watch the movie, but just voted based on hype. It is not a movie I would recommend owning. Slumdog Millionaire brings to life a most unusual but plausible story of a young man who had to raise himself with his brother on the streets of Mumbai and deal with his affection and ever increasing love for a young woman who seems to be pitifully elusive. In addition, he must fight against the thugs and street gangs, one of which his brother eventually joins for excitement and money. Yes, on the surface it's about a young man who is so good at the Indian TV version of "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" that the police torture him to make him reveal "his way of cheating" on the quiz show. However, this film goes so much deeper; we see his life in a series of flashbacks as he explains to the police just how he was actually able to know all the answers to the questions on the quiz show. In addition, the cinematography and the choreography lack nothing; I couldn't ask for better. The casting was wonderfully done with great care and the acting is extremely convincing--wow, what a group of actors they had in this movie! The musical score enhances the movie as well.

When the action starts, we meet two young boys who are brothers, the very young Salim (Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail) and Jamal (Ayush Mahesh Khedekar). After they witness their mother being brutally killed by an angry mob, the two young boys are defenseless and they toughen up pretty quickly to adapt to being on their own, although Salim seems to do a little bit better at it. Salim is not afraid of much and he even sells his brother's prized celebrity autograph merely because he wants the money for himself; when Jamal is upset about it Salim just smiles and says he got good money for it and so that makes it right. Already we are seeing Salim going to the wrong side of the tracks. Salim and Jamal also meet another orphaned child, Latika (Rubina Ali) and Jamal takes a liking to Latika almost immediately, he even feels that with a third kid they can be just like "The Three Musketeers!"

As time goes by we see the boys grow and develop; but Latika is sadly left behind when the boys climb aboard a moving train to escape the evil operator of an "orphanage" who likes to maim the youngsters who he forces to beg for money in the streets. Jamal misses Latika very, very badly but Salim just makes light of it; Jamal however is determined to find Latika and ultimately make her his own no matter low long his search for her takes. Eventually they do find Latika but Salim and Latika mysteriously spurn Jamal; and then it takes Jamal several years more to find Latika again. As adults, we see the grown Jamal (Dev Patel), Salim (Madhur Mittal) and Latika (Freida Pinto) coping with life and trying to work on relationships as best they can under horrible circumstances that I will not reveal here; I don't want to give you any spoilers. Of course, what you do know is that Jamal makes it onto the quiz show and he is well on his way to winning a lot of money; he even gets around the game show host Prem Kumar (Anil Kapoor) who tries to throw Jamal off with a phony tip on the answer to the next question on the quiz show.

The rest is left for you to discover; but I shall say you won't be bored. This is an excellent, poignant film that will leave you with quite a lasting impression. The extras on the DVD are quite well done, too. I especially liked the featurette entitled "Slumdog Dreams: Danny Boyle & The Making of Slumdog Millionaire." There are optional audio commentaries by director Danny Boyle and Dev Patel and producer Christian Colson and writer Simon Beaufoy. We get deleted scenes, too.

Slumdog Millionaire makes a great addition to your DVD collection; it did win eight Academy Awards including the Oscar for Best Picture and that alone proves this movie is very, very special. There is a modicum of violence so if you're turned off by that you may wish to reconsider; but the way this plays out is so artistic that you might just want to get this and enjoy it anyway.

"Read the Book. The DVD is lame." 2009-08-26

Having read multiple reviews on this website, the trend seems to be that people who read the book first hate this series. People who did not read the book, love the series. I am one who read the book before watching this dreadful series. Let me say that I have previosly enjoyed multiple HBO prductions. Being a native of Baltimore The Wire was fantastic and I watched the entire series in a few months. On this production (John Adams) I feel they failed miserably and it's a shame cause this truly is a great story. The acting is somewhat good and the production in itself is done fairly well. Paul Giamnti does his best to portray a difficult character. The actors playing Ben Franklin and George Washington do a nice job as well. The prize winner has to be Laura Linny. She gives a stellar performance as Abigail Adams. She's the one occurance where the book and series seem to agree. Where this seris goes wrong is how they tell the story. They miss so many key elements and I don't know how people who haven't previously read the book have any clue as to what's going on. When Adams went to France, do the viewers know it usually took up to a month to cross the Atlantic? The series makes it seem like an overnite trip. The book is very focused on the letters John and Abigail wrote back and forth while he was away. Only once do these letters get spoken of in the series. These are beautifly writtin letters and it's a shame the series brushed them aside to make room for made up drama. There are many maticulous errors in the series but I won't spend my time listing them. To me, the more galring problem is the choppiness of the series. HBO continues to produce some of the best TV around. From "The Sopranos" to "The Wire" to "Rome" to "Deadwood," the cable channel is doing something extremely right. Add "John Adams" to the list of great television events brought about by these folks.

Paul Giamatti may have come to national attention as the lovable shlub Miles in "Sideways," but John Adams provides Giamatti with the role of a lifetime in one of America's most important Founding Fathers. Indeed, the unwritten subtitle of this series could be, "The Forgotten Founding Father."

By bringing to brilliant light the story of Adams' life and critical importance to our young nation, this series reminds us that it took more than Ben Franklin, George Washington, and Thomas Jefferson to give birth to our country. (Of course, the series exercises its own form of prejudice by completely ignoring James Madison, who played more than a minor role in the whole business!) Adams was a critical Massachusetts leader before the Revolution, he was a leader in the negotiation of the Declaration of Independence, he was a critical diplomat for the new country in Europe, and he provided crucial leadership as Vice President, President, and elder statesman.

The strengths of this series are many, but stem primarily from relying heavily on David McCullough's stellar biography on Adams. His "rotundancy" is shown as he was - warts and all. Adams was a brilliant, vain, pompous, ambitious man, and yet he channeled so much of himself into forming and guiding our young nation that it is impossible to say that without Adams, there would not be a United States as we understand it today, and perhaps not at all.

The movie also humanizes Adams. We see his early struggles with the notion of independence as he takes the British side in the Boston Massacre, defending the British soldiers accused of murder even as his own cousin, Sam Adams, lobbies for their hanging. John Adams is reluctant to break away from Britain as he sees America as dangerously close to mob rule. His journey to ardent foe of Britain is a joy to watch.

"John Adams" could also be called "The Adams Family." Laura Linney almost steals the movie with her performance as Adams' beloved and brilliant wife Abigail. This self-educated woman was a paragon of virtue and wisdom, and her partnership with her husband elevated John to what he was to become. These two experience more joys and sorrows in their 54-year marriage(!) than most families experience in several generations. John and Abigail provide the emotional high points of the series, and there are many. Their correspondence, including references to each other as "Dearest Friend," are incredibly touching.

Look for well-rounded performances from a wide cast of characters, but Giamatti and Linney remain the anchor for this first-rate production. Stephen Dillane is particularly fine as Thomas Jefferson, Adams' friend, then nemesis, then friend. Tom Wilkinson, as always, is excellent in his role as Ben Franklin. Sarah Polley shines in her small role as Adams' darling daughter Nabby. And Rufus Sewell makes for a satisfying "villain" in Alexander Hamilton, a huge thorn in Adams' plump side.

This series should be required viewing for all high school students who want a realistic, warts-and-all depiction of the birth of our nation and the struggles and sacrifices (and triumphs) of one of the most important Americans who ever lived. Kudos to all involved.

"About this blu-ray transfer." 2009-08-13

No need to say anything about the movies; for me, a huge LOTR fan, this is just the best cinematic trilogy ever. This is about the blu-ray transfer. There are people who did not like it, and this for two reasons: 1) It does not look better than the DVD. This is simply not true. I have played both Coppola restorations in the same player and TV, and the difference between the upgraded DVD and the Blu-Ray is huge. The quality of the image in Blu-Ray is just mind-blowing (at least in this US edition). 2) It is grainy. This one is true, and yet, I have seen more grain in very recent movies. And, after all, it is the original grain of the celluloid, not some DNR artifact, so it is actually cinematographically great to see it; it is the way the director and photographer intended it to look. If you want pristine grainless clarity, forget about this one (and yet, it is not that grainy...I was surprised to see so little of it after having read some grain-haters reviews), but if you want to watch it as good as, or proably better, than in cinemas, this is it.

I agree with most of these reviews, positive and negative. The bottom line is that the dvd's are rather grainy but are still sharp quality. Its been a long time since I have owned a vhs player but Im sure that if I put the two side by side I would be able to tell a great diffrence in quality. However this generation is not trying to recapture 1970 for nostalgia, but blu ray quality for their big screen. All that aside I would reccomend this for its price and the quality thus far

It is my personal opinion that The Godfather 1 & 2 are probably the greatest films ever made. So of course I owned them on VHS... then I bought them again on DVD... and Now I'm the proud owner of the entire trilogy (plus a bunch of extras and an over sized booklet) on Blu-Ray.

Was it worth the money to buy this set again? I guess it depends on who you are and what you like. First of all, I generally prefer theatrical versions to any other versions of films - there are a few exceptions of course, but on the whole I prefer the theatrical release - which is what these BDVDs are. Many people will not be huge fans of the graininess of the film or the orange hue of the film. Expecially if you are used to watching the extremely sharp and crisp newer movies released on Blu-ray. But there is something about that grainy texture and warm lighting that makes this film seem all the more immediate, they welcome the viewer in and you quickly forget yourself in the rise and fall of Michael.

So yes to me the investment was well worth the purchase, we have watched these movies hundreds of times and it feels like every time I catch yet another subtle nuance, gesture or deeper meaning.

Others will find this to be a waste of their hard earned money - they just want to see the movie. Some people are content to just watch it when it comes on A&E - but to the true fans, the upgrade to Blu-ray is a must.

"The Gold Standard of Digital Film Restoration" 2009-06-28

There are so many reviews on these 3 films that I will just comment on the quality of the restoration. This has to be one of the top 5, if not the best, jobs done on film restoration to date. Paramount used one of the best restoration labs in the world, owned by Warner Brothers, to restore this film only after a Kodak owned lab cleared it as being sturdy enough to run through the digitizing equipment. The whole restoration was spurred by a letter to Spielberg from Coppola asking him if he could get Paramount, who had recently been bought by Viacom if they would do a restoration on the Godfather films. The head of Paramount didn't even hesitate to cut the large check to fund the restoration. The result? Coppola says its more beautiful then he remembered it. The extent of the restoration is included on the Bonus disc. And in that the clip you will see that the filmographer instead of filming the scenes correctly exposed and then having the lab darken the frames went with shooting the scenes dark, the result being there is no detail in the black areas of the film. This explains how difficult it was to get this quality of a restoration, which meant finding the best copy available, which still left much to be desired, and going frame my frame and digitally correcting the image. What is impressive is that the WB Studio lab consulted the original filmographer. I don't know if there is an Academy Award for restoration, but if there is, I know this team deserves it.

NOTE: There seems to be some here that don't like the way the film looks. I suggest they watch Emulsional Rescue - Revealing the Godfather on the bonus disc. Anyone that buys the set, may want to watch it first too to see how the films were shot, underexposed and with an orange tint, and the care taken to restore that look and even in 1 scene improve on it. Watching this feature first will show that its the way it was shot and meant to look, not the restoration.

I wasn't a fan of this movie back when it first came out in 1997, but after years of my father playing it on DVD I began to love it. You had Blade Runner in the 80's and The Fifth Element in the 90's. Both are Sci-Fi epics that are an acquired taste and get better the more times you watch them. This film introduced the world to Milla Jovovich and it's still one of my favorite performances from her. Bruce Willis, Gary Oldman and Chris Tucker (oh so annoying, but it works here) round out the excellent cast and create memorable characters. The unique visuals and music still hold up extremely well and the "blue diva alien" song still never fails to impress. This was one of my first Blu-rays (very good picture quality) and probably gets more play than the others.

This remastered Blu-Ray version was watched on a Panasonic 42" Plasma and BD35K player. PQ 4/5 and AQ 5/5.

I had not seen this film in a few years and found the visuals, and overarching storyline refreshing. The costume design and visual look of the film was particularly interesting and offered stylistic elements not seen on film since. The creatures seemed reminiscent of the Dark Crystal, which is one of my favorite films, so it felt familiar in that sense.

The characters were relatable, and the "perfect" being was particularly touching as a "messenger" of sorts, in communicating our inherent habit of destroying ourselves, which of course, is one of the central themes of the film. Though not preachy, this characters' innocense and emphasis on this theme recentered the film to the core concepts effectively. Despite the fact that the film is filled with visually interesting effects and sound design/effects, this allows the film to remain humanistic. Many science fiction films fail in this regard, instead becoming overshadowed with technological aspects and special effects, but the Fifth Element stays true to its underlying message of the need and appreciation for love and the importance of humanity.

Overall, this film was entertaining and action packed. However, I didn't give it a 5, because it seemed to lag in parts and some of the acting was overdone, in a way, that was too distracting, for me. Still for its visual elemements and overall theme, it was one of the most interesting sci-fi flicks I've seen. Recommended.

What can I say about this show?

I truly believe this is currently the best show on TV and it is currently Showtime most watched show. I do not like that Amazon review the show True Love which in my opinion does not hold a candle to Dexter. In this season Dexter finally makes a true friend, who knows about his "Dark Passenger". The season finale is truly almost as good as the first season finale. And the 4th season is probably going to be even better than the first,(which I consider to be the best season of any show ever) based on the Comic-con preview.

I read that the first episode of the fourth season got leaked online, but Im going to wait to watch it in Showtime for the truly awesome HD.

All 12 episodes of Dexter come to Blu-ray with 1080p AVC/MPEG-4 video presentations, and look just as great as Season 1 and Season 2 did. Unlike many recent television releases, Dexter truly shines in high-definition. The show's sunny and colorful environment brings some of the most vibrant colors and fantastic detail on a television release. Black levels held up quite well, aside from a few darker-lit scenes. Like previous seasons, there is a healthy amount of grain present at times, but is not really intrusive to the experience. Fans of the show must pick up the Blu-ray release. 9/10.

Audio

A 5.1 Dolby TrueHD audio track is included, sounding very very nice. The show's music is once again a beautiful thing to experience at the beginning of every episode, with such a dynamic and aggressive music mix, each instrument and sound clear as can be. Dialogue was always clear and easy to understand, and the mix did a great job at creating environment for the show. The track doesn't always call for a lively mix, but when it fits, it's used well. 8/10.

Blu-news Summary

Dexter is definitely one of my big television loves, the show is dark and humorous, and will have you wanting to watch episode after episode until you realize what time it is. The show is completely unique, and anyone who gives the show a chance will love it.

Dexter: The Third Season brings some great new characters to the show, some lasting longer than others. This Season also features quite a bit of changes in the office for all the characters we have all come to love, from Batista to Deb. But those changes are nothing compared to what Dexter has to face this season, including some good and bad surprises. The season is a bit less exciting than the second season was, but definitely better than the first season.

The Blu-ray release is fantastic, featuring top notch video and a good audio mix. Extras are a tad disappointing as they are exclusive to BD-Live, but I believe the DVD doesn't include anything at all without a computer. Despite a few annoyances, this season is still fantastic compared to most shows on TV, and deserves to be 'Highly Recommended.'

After the climaxes that ended Season Two, Dexter's impending marriage and child, you could be excused for believing Dexter would turn over a new leaf. Having narrowly missed being caught in Season Two you would assume Dexter would change his ways, but right from the start of the first episode it's clear that isn't going to happen. Dexter's first kill also sets in motion the events of Season Three. But rather than killing based on his code, Dexter accidentally kills in self-defense. The killing draws in powerful Assistant District Attorney Miguel Prado (Jimmy Smits) and his volatile deputy sheriff brother Ramon (played to intense perfection by Jason Manuel Olazabal). As with seasons one and two plot twists abound against the backdrop of Dexter's impending nuptials. Pressure mounts for Dexter to give up his freedom and his apartment. He's now questioning the wisdom of the code his father Harry taught him. Are his days of vengeance coming to an end?

As with previous seasons the other cast members are more fully flushed out including a budding romance for Detective Batista (played with great warmth and honesty by David Zayas). Dexter's sister Deb (the superbly foul-mouthed Jennifer Carpenter, Michael C. Hall's real life wife) is drawn to a confidential informant who may help her earn her detective's shield or blow her chances for it. At the same time there's complications with Deb's partner Detective Quinn and an Internal Affairs agent Yuki Amado who needs Deb's help investigating Quinn. A new serial killer, the Skinner, emerges to distract the detectives. In a change from seasons one and two the focus shifts to the rest of this wonderful ensemble cast and away from a heavy emphasis on Dexter. Yet the central plot remains the burgeoning relationship between Dexter and Miguel as both jockey for power and control as events unfold. There's little surprise in the outcome of this lethal pas de duex and in that respect "Dexter" falls into the trap of becoming too formulaic. But end of the Skinner and the role Dexter plays is a true "didn't see that coming" moment that shows the writers are still on top of their game. Dexter manages to slip away again, untroubled and undetected. But now that he's married what does the future hold? After nearly being killed will Dexter give up the code and the killings? And what will Deb do as she slowly learns more about her father's and Dexter's pasts?

"Dexter" is one of the most tautly scripted, well directed and superbly casted shows on television, and a delight to watch. Season Three was interesting to watch for the examination of the degrees of good and evil. Miguel's unnuanced form of vigilante justice was an interesting counterpoint Dexter's reasoned icy logic for killing that is clearly a metaphor for our own society's debate over justice and Manichean concepts of good and evil. "Dexter" continues to delight in poking holes in our concepts of good and evil by getting us to root for a serial killer. It will be interesting to see if Dexter's conversion from lone wolf to nurturing husband and father will change that.

Now to the show... Dexter is an incredible series. The fact that Showtime can put a harder edge on it than network TV could makes a huge difference. The freedom to up the violence, gore, nudity and sex has paid big dividends. HBO and Showtime have quickly become the mecca for anyone looking for quality shows. I believe Dexter leads an exclusive pack that also includes Weeds and True Blood close behind. I hope Dexter makes a long, Soprano-type run. I would love to see this series make it to 8 or 10 years.

The one thing I notice is that 'negative' reviews are not looked highly upon, especially shows with a following.

And another thing about rating this. I'm not sure if I'm supposed to be rating the product (blu-ray dvd), or I'm rating this season of the show.

More specifically I am rating this show's season.

I am a huge fan of this show, but i felt this season was VERY sloppy. Very underdeveloped ideas, sub-par drama, followed by lousy resolution and following action.

Compared to the first 2 seasons, it seemed like this season was a collection of random ideas they joined together that were rejects of the other seasons.

The Shows acting was great, and the first 3-4 episodes were good/great. It led to some mystery and developing drama... But just became unfocused, and seemed like... the person who originally was writing the plot died and let some random person just try to finish it.

Great Show, i love it, I just hope the next season redeems the show.

I really love this movie. If one has not seen the shows I would recommend them.

Aside for my rocoomendation, this film has been sold in many different forms but they are basically all the same.

What I am trying to say is, if you own a copy you got it all. If they want to sell more of this series, they should make new movies, episodes. Never should they just repackage the same product over and over again.

I still love the characters and the story, but am annoyed at buying the same product in a different package!

You can't really review "Serenity" without spending a wee bit of time talking about Firefly - The Complete Series. "Firefly" was, in short, an amazing cancelled TV series. It was a cross between Westerns and Scifi, what I've heard called numerous times "Han Solo in the Old West". You had this cast of characters that was downright superb. Mal was the captain, bitter from losing a war in Serenity Valley and secretly having feelings for Inara, the on-ship Companion who often uses her esteemed status to get the crew out of capers. Zoe is his second-in-command, a fairly emotionless woman who doesn't hesitate following orders. Wash, Zoe's husband, is the pilot, goofy, wise-cracking, and adoring his wife. Jayne thinks about himself and isn't terribly brilliant. Kaylee is the sweet mechanic who wants to be ravaged in bed by the attractive doctor, Simon, who in turned left a life of plenty to rescue his sister, River, from being experimented on. Lastly, we have Shepherd Book, a man of God who is somehow living with these criminals and not abiding in his monastery.

Unfortunately, the producers didn't see the magic of "Firefly" and canceled the series. However, Joss Whedon, the man behind this brainchild, was given the chance to catapult his dream onto the big screen--a big deal for a full-fledged series, much, much bigger for a series canceled before finishing its first season.

The story of "Serenity" is basically tying the loose ends from the TV series. Simon took River away from a lab where they were turning her into a psychic assassin. But now, the Parliament has sent a man known only as the Operative after her, to bring her back. Because River knows secrets...secrets that are about to get the crew of Serenity in very serious trouble.

The first time I watched it, I watched "Serenity" without seeing the TV series first, and, while I still enjoyed it, it was terribly confusing. You spend the better part of half the movie trying to catch up. Then, I purchased "Firefly", watched the entire series, and fell in love. THEN I rewatched "Serenity", and found that it makes much more sense.

To see the entire cast back is a joy. And to finally learn what happened to River, what she knew, was great. But I have quite a few reservations about the movie as a whole.

The characters feel...off. Mal is so grouchy. Where is his wry humor, glinted at in the beginning with the words "This is the captain. We have a little problem with our entry sequence, so we may experience some slight turbulence and then - explode"? So much of the time, Mal is a brutal, stiff, angry man...nothing like the man we met in "Firefly". He readily brings along River on a job, when in "Firefly" he would never have done that, not after the strange things she did. And his fights with Simon, how he treated Simon and River...it almost seemed as if none of "Firefly" had happened. Simon and River weren't crew to him in "Serenity"; something that vastly contradicts what he says and does in "Firefly".

Another sad aspect is Inara. Besides obviously not being in much of the movie, when she is there, she is delegated action girl and given a gun. Yes, the stakes are high, but the stakes were high in many of their previous jobs, and never once did she don action girl clothes and tout a gun. She was in the back, helping Simon nurse the wounded or acting as backup or some other such function (as in the "Heart of Gold" episode). I just felt it violated her crucial role on the team.

While the story is absolutely superb, interesting, on the edge of your seat, it disintegrates into a plain 'ol action flick in the last hour. Lots of Star Wars-y space battles, fist fights, shoot-outs...yes, "Firefly" had its fair share of shootouts, but nothing on the scale of "Serenity". I almost felt that they were included, to "show off" the film, to draw as many into the seats, wow them, and get them to come back for more.

There were a few other aspects I didn't like...but to detail them would probably be huge spoilers. Let's just say, not everyone makes it out in the end. And seeing that...makes me very sad indeed (although I understand not everyone can survive).

So, there we have it. The gasping breath of "Firefly", the movie "Serenity". I wish it blew my socks off. Alas, it did not. Don't get me wrong; I don't hate it. It's okay to watch, particularly if you have seen "Firefly". Personally, I just hate seeing the characters I've grown to love in "Firefly" change so drastically. Many people apparently didn't have a problem with it. Maybe I'm just weird. Regardless, I very sadly give a 3 stars. Bring back Firefly...the way it should be!

Okay, There are a dozen Friday 13th movies out there, okay? So there's really nothing new, you got Jason and a couple of college-aged, horny kids who decide to camp or take a vacation at the wrong place and get sliced and diced. This is how its ALWAYS been. I'm not complaining, i'm just trying to make you aware of what you should expect by now if you've seen all the previous ones. There is really no difference.

Jason In my opinion was actually pretty brutal in this one. He's got some new moves. There was one gruesome murder that i couldnt watch becuase it just seem like such a BAD way to die. ugh!! Overall it was pretty good movie, i wouldnt buy it, but i would rent it, like maybe on netflix or something.

Parts That Annoyed Me:

Okay, i get it that alot of guys LOVE to see bouncing breasts, Vaginas, and other sex scenes, and i get that producers or directors add that kind of stuff into movies to get high ratings, but its like every five minutes you see a naked chick. I can NEVER watch a movie nowadays without a sex scene popping up anymore. What's up with this generation? All the sex doesnt bother me that much, however i was glad that i watched the movie alone to avoid feeling awkward in front of my parents and sister. I guess you can call me old fashion even though i'm 23, but all that crap was just uncalled for, really. if youre a guy reading this, i don't expect you to understand my view.

As for the Racist comments that people say about this movie, well it wasnt that bad, however i didnt think that all racial situations was really necessary either. Again, why can't I watch a movie with a black guy in it but at same time being withdrawn from ANY kind of racial parts? why couldnt the black guy be treated like the rest of the white fokes in it? i don't get it. They had an asian guy in there too, however they failed to do any racial parts for him, so i guess movies just arent nice to black fokes.

As for the asian kid, His character was a bit awkward, like he was desperately trying his hardest to fit in with the group. The character just seemed very weird and out of place. NOt that actual actor but the character he played.

Don't missunderstand-me I am a huge fan of the Friday, the 13th franchise, accepting all the goodies and even the awful and funny aspects of any of the previous films. After all, they're only slashers, fun to watch if you're a huge Jason's fan. But this remake is by far the worst of them all. It's not a remake at all of the original film, more like a "wannabe" mix of the first three films, problably because the producers were totally aware that the disaster they were into would be their first and last (like The Omen remake, etc..)

The worst part it's that there's not one decent killing in the 105' full lenght film. Jason (even when he puts his famous mask on) doesn't scare at all. It's a complete joke of a boogey man. They had achieve to destroy one of the hugest modern myths of horror films. BTW, nowadays there's anyone capable of create some new monsters after Freddy, Michael Myers, Jason, Leatheface, The Tall Man from Phantasm or even Chucky...? Kind of pitty. The horny drug-addict stupid bunch of kids are by far the most ridiculous group I've seen on all the previous film. There isn't any kind of story or desenvelopement at all. The only interesting actor it's Supernatural's Jared Padalecki.

The movie it's shaky, excesevily dark, blurry and ugly to watch, and that seeing it in HD and on a 300 inches digital projection . Problably the only one thing remaining from the old films it's that the girls are breast naked practicly all the film. In the year 2009, I think that it would have been better and wittier have a little less male chauvisinsm and had a littl more equality in the nudity.

Please Hollywood, stop destroying great old horror films, making pointless and by far much worst remakes. I'm shaking about the new Elm St.

Well, I am a big fan of the slasher horror movies and was really looking forward to these reboots of some old series. After Halloween I had high hopes for Friday the 13th and was fairly impressed with a couple of minor letdowns. This movie did not drag at all and there was a respectable body count, but it seems like that was about the most important thing. The story was a little sparse (ok, I know it's a slasher movie and it's not going to win an Emmy) but I could live with that. I liked how they started out making it seem mostly realistic and I was hoping that they were going to get away from the "Jason is immortal" bit that started making the later Friday the 13th films so campy and corny. Unfortunately, the ending kind of spoiled that. I don't want to give anything away but the last scene is kind of predictable and to me that kind of killed it. I don't really want them to remake every one of the Jason movies (please, no more Jason X movies) but they did set it up for the inevitable sequel.

I guess Hollywood is running out of ideas and they want to see how far they can take a remake of the series...

"Jason Is Back, and Deadlier Than Ever..." 2009-07-23

After hacking and slashing his way through ten films, although to be fair his mother did the killing in the first film, Jason Voorhees' film career looked to be getting more mundane and inept with each passing sequel. With every new installment the killing was getting bloodier and more pointless as each victim became less and less likeable; meanwhile, the stories were becoming even more simplistic and at times downright ridiculous ("Jason X", need I say more). Even after horror fans flocked to see the masked one go toe-to-toe with Elm Street's master of our nightmares in "Freddy Vs Jason", it seemed that getting Jason to go on another solo spree in a new "Friday the 13th" wasn't something fans were all that anxious to see. However, in the same year the two titans of terror came to blows, producer/director Michael Bay released a successful retooling of an old horror classic "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre". With the success of that reboot, along with the remake of "The Amityville Horror" two years later, it appeared audiences were interested in seeing some of their old favorites dusted off and brought into modern times. This brings us to 2009 and the return of Jason Voorhees in Marcus Nispel's re-imagining of "Friday the 13th".

"Friday the 13th" follows the bloody exploits of masked killer Jason Voorhees as he disposes of any and all trespassers who are unfortunate enough to come onto the property of the now defunct Camp Crystal Lake. Six weeks after a group of hikers mysteriously disappeared near the former camp; a brother to one of the hikers (Jared Padalecki) arrives in search of his missing sister. At the same time, a group of friends looking forward to a weekend full of carefree merriment soon find themselves inadvertently wandering off the beaten path and catching the eye of Jason. With the body count rising as Jason mercilessly dispenses his sentence upon all who come near; survival quickly becomes the order of the day. The question is, "How many of these unwitting young adults will make it out of the area alive?"

After ten movies focusing either directly or indirectly on the story of Jason Voorhees, not to mention that after the fourth or fifth sequel the quality of the remainder of the films dropped drastically, one would not be out of place to wonder if yet another "Friday the 13th" was warranted. Personally, I've never been all that much of a fan of the "Friday the 13th" series; I was more intrigued by the "Halloween" franchise (at least the first two films and then "H20"). I will admit that "Freddy Vs Jason" was an entertaining horror film that was much smarter than anything either of the series' had delivered separately to audiences in some time. With that in mind, I didn't exactly walk away with a desire to see another stand alone sequel in either character's series of films.

With all that being said, perhaps you may be wondering why then did I choose to watch this reboot of "Friday the 13th", especially since I wasn't a fan of the character's previous films. My answer would be this, based on what I had seen in the various trailers for the film, it appeared that this installment may be a little more realistic and of a slightly higher quality than all of its predecessors (neither of these achievements would be all that hard to accomplish by the way). Written by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift ("Freddy Vs Jason"), and directed by Marcus Nispel, who is no stranger to the re-imagined horror film after helming the reboot for "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre", this newest "Friday" film is arguably the best this series has seen in its nearly 30 year history.

The story this time around is much tighter in focus and aimed primarily at returning Jason to his roots, minus (for the most part) the cheesy dialogue and bad acting that plagued the initial series' run. In general, the plot is fairly believable, or as much as it can be given the type of movie and genre it's in; however, there are a few instances where we're asked to suspend our brains a little too much in order to go along with something despite it clearly being impossible. Another complaint was that for a little while early on in the movie I found myself wondering if I was actually going to see much more from the story and its characters besides references and usages of drugs and numerous sexual escapades. Eventually, the story finally got moving, and the sex and drugs became less rampant within the movie. In regards, to the dialogue, for the majority of the film it was full of typical teenage banter, but without it being overly annoying. Yet there were a couple of moments where the dialogue took a nosedive and became far too clichéd or inane for its own good. The plot point involving the search for the missing hikers was a neat way of tying the entire movie together, and provided one of only a few characters you actually hoped would survive through to the end of the movie.

The cast of "Friday the 13th" was surprisingly better than your typical horror film cast. That being said, there were still only a handful of characters that I actually became interested in. Leading the cast of semi-familiar faces is Jared Padalecki (TV's "Supernatural") as the estranged brother of one of the missing hikers that ran afoul of Jason six weeks prior. Jared brings a charisma and likeability to the character that allows the viewer to actually root for his survival regardless of the built-in sympathy card the writers have included in the movie for him. Joining him in his search is actress Danielle Panabaker ("Mr. Brooks") as one member of a group of friends that are spending a fun-filled weekend near the old Camp Crystal Lake site. Danielle imbues her character with warmth and innocence, plus there's a surprising sincerity in her portrayal that cannot be ignored. By all rights, Danielle put more effort into her character than any horror movie role ever calls for, but it was that dedication that elevated her performance far above those of the other actors playing her vacationing friends. The remainder of the supporting cast ranged from good to slightly irritating, but what else should one expect when watching a horror movie?

Lastly, I wanted to touch briefly upon the main driving force of the movie, the monstrosity that is Jason Voorhees himself. In this movie I finally believe that Jason could actually catch one of his victims as he is more proactive in his approach to "hunting". A much needed new twist to the character was showcased in the time the writers took in showing Jason as more of a predator stalking his prey rather than just a brainless behemoth. The fact that Jason actually runs in pursuit of his victims is a definite, and much appreciated, boost to how much more fearsome he is this time around. As for the Jason's killings, they are definitely prevalent throughout the story, and the writers have clearly taken advantage of the opportunity provided them by Jason's newfound smarts to become a little more creative with how he goes about his business. For the horror junkies out there, don't worry about your favorite, or perhaps I should say one of your favorite, killers going soft after his thirty year run. This is the most violent and hard-hitting of the Jason movies, at least in my opinion.

At its best "Friday the 13th" is a decently entertaining, fast-paced slasher film that cleverly combines all of the strongest elements of the first three movies in the original series while applying a modern twist. When not at its best, the movie devolves into bouts of irritating arguments and conversations that are pointless from the get-go, moments that stretch believability too far or just relying far too much on an over-abundance of sex and drug related scenes. It's not the best horror film I've ever seen, but it is one of the better ones that have been released here lately.

"Friday the 13th" is rated R for violence, language, gore, and sexuality/nudity.

"A Worthy Reboot of the Iconic Franchise" 2009-07-16

Jason's return to the big screen is an enjoyable film for both longtime fans of Friday the 13th as well as general audiences. The acting and production values are superior to the average Friday flick, yet it still manages to maintain many of the guilty pleasures that draw people to these films. There is blood and gore aplenty and an amount of gratuitous (female) nudity that rivals late night HBO.

This is not to say the movie is perfect. The kills, while entertaining, could have been more unique. Some added character development for the second group of characters would have been beneficial as well.

As for the blu-ray, the video and audio are both superb. Sadly, the extras are a little sparse. The behind the scenes look at how they filmed the kills, while being entertaining and informative, is a little short. An in-depth look at the making of the film would have been a great addition to the disk. The deleted scenes are nothing special, although it should be mentioned that one gives viewers an alternate (and bloodier) scenario in which Jason gets his mask. The best feature of the blu-ray is that it provides both the theatrical and extended cut of the movie. It is a shame the studio did not provide the dvd with this feature.

The differences between the theatrical and "killer" cuts are about what you would expect for a movie like this. Some of the kills (most notably--and enjoyably--Trent's) are longer and bloodier. The nude/sex scene at the beginning is longer, as is the now infamous Julianna Guill sex scene towards the end. There is also a little additional dialog and character development. The most notable difference is the addition of a chase/escape scene involving Amanda Righetti's character. These additions do make the film a harder R, but do not expect an entirely different movie.

For me personally, the movie is a welcome respite for the emergence of the "torture-porn" sub-genre within horror films. Saw, its numerous sequels, and its imitators, have never appealed to me in the same way that slasher films do.

"Whether or Not your Reaction is Positive, 300 is a Must See" 2009-08-21

300 is one of those movies, that, despite whether or not it's worth watching more than once, is a must see, if not more than once. 300 subject matter alone is kind of an acquired taste (war and politics, a topic that doesn't interest me in movies as much as, say, crime and gangsters, and it's presented in the most fanciful way I've ever seen. I've seen other sword and sandals efforts such as Troy (which was slow and boring), but nothing quite like this. The closest thing that comes close to mimicking this kind of subject matter is God Of War (Awesome game series, by the way), and even that doesn't really come close to being the subject matter. To say there's nothing quite like 300 is pretty accurate. Though not perfect, it's safe to say that 300 is THE movie for anybody who has ever dreamed of being a warrior in ancient greece. Whether or not

The greatest asset of 300 is it's style. Stunning, to say the least. The style of the whole movie is stunning. The costumes aside (which didn't bother me, just kind of seemed like fan service) And while It's not tear-jerking, hearing the crowds in 300 shout can bring chills down your spine if your not careful (for a real life example, try listening to a Penn State Crowd chant "we Are Penn State!". Kind of like that). While it's not rife of substance, the sense of pride displayed y the Spartans cannot be denied, it prevents 300 from being a borefest; akin to watching a battle plan resembling a board meeting. It even ends uplifting and inspiring in a way, so the road to glory in this movie may be worth it for you.

The battle scenes are fun, and while violent and gory, it's pretty stylized that you can have fun, this isn't a Martin Scorcese film (because his movies are pretty brutal and not exactly fun to watch onscreen). There's a lot of emphasis on slow motion, with tons of ultra-comic book gore that squirts out everywhere, further satisfying with way-cool sound effects. Battles are epic, with raining arrows, lot's of testerone yelling As far as sex and nudity, some of it is there, though it's pretty ignorable. I thought the nude sex scenes were basically put into the Other visuals feasts include the dancing scene (filmed underwater) and the odd Persian ritual dance, type thing.

More on the CGI technology. The entire aural glow, a mystical, stunning showcase, is pretty akin to Frank Miller's previous adaption, Sin City, which was also masterfully redone. It's set in a fanciful ancient Greece, with vast fields, sprawling mountains, and more, all topped off with lot's of glow Little visuals effects abound, such as floating grains in the grain fields, snow, rain, water effects, it shows how much they time they took into post-production

Still though, I think this is kind of a hard movie to recommend, depending on who you are. Personally, 300's subject matter isn't my fantasy or a great interest; as a matter of fact, I feel that politics is one of the most overdone and boring topics these days (Yes, I realize a lot of the bands I listen to have a political message, but they make truly memorable music that has as much, even more merit than the message ie Gang of Four, The Clash, RATM, etc). That' why I had to give this one three stars. That, however, should not deter you from seeing 300. Although my grade kind of reflects what you fantasize regarding the subject matter, 300 is a movie that you really can't tell what to expect, not quite. For example, I was expecting more monsters, though there wasn't much (BOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!). Even with that though, I still highly recommend seeing 300, even if you didn't like Sin City.

"An Entertaining Depiction of A Great Historical Event" 2009-08-20

Although this may not be historically accurate in many respects, it is a fun action show. It is not intended to be a historical documentary and it clearly is not.

It portrays the Battle of Thermopylae where 300 Spartans and a handful of other Greeks defended their homeland against the Persian hordes of Xerxes. Although the battle was a loss for the Spartans, it was a great testament to the power of those fighting to protect their homeland compared to those merely serving as muscle for a tyrant. The efforts of the Spartans are legendary and deserving of being remembered and honored.

The bottom line is that it is full of action. The entertainment is non stop. For those who enjoy this genre, this is worth watching.

"It overcame my prejudice!" 2009-08-20

When I first watched this version of P&P, I cringed at all the flaws - Ehle was too old to play Lizzy nor did she fit the book's description very well & the whole athletic-tomboy flavor the script writer gave her still irks me even now. Yes, Lizzy loved the outdoors & she loved walking, but the jogging thing would have been unladylike & she understood propriety.

The actress who played Jane, while pretty in a classical way, was hardly the beauty described by Austen. Mrs. Bennett's portrayal was screechy & over the top. Lydia's was a little overdone, too. Darcy's taking a dip in the pond at Pemberly was just stupid (& I am so grateful that Firth refused to cooperate with their misguided intention to make it a skinny-dipping scene). The list goes on, but it's actually not the point of my review. Suffice it to say, my first viewing of this edition was not enthusiastic.

Then, after watching the 1980 BBC version & turning it off in disgust (too much of the story was changed & Rintoul's Darcy was painfully stiff & unappealing), I decided to try this one again & just accept the flaws & overlook them. To my surprise, everytime I see this version I love it more!

It was quite faithfully adapted from Austen's book, & for the most part, the changes made for the script stayed true to the book in spirit. Yes, Ehle's jogging still sets my teeth on edge & she still was not quite so light & light-hearted as Lizzy, nor was Colin Firth's portrayal of Darcy flawless. BUT they are both excellent actors & did such a masterful job with what they had! And I seriously doubt that anyone will ever be able to surpass Firth's portrayal of Darcy - he conveyed so much emotion with just the expression of his eyes!

Having now seen all 4 versions (1940, 1980, 1996 & 2005) thru our local library, THIS alone is the version that I have decided is a must have for my personal library! It has actually positively enhanced my appreciation of Austen's story!

I am fond of Pride and Prejudice and especially this version. So it was a real pleasure to watch it in DVD!!!

I think that if you like Jane Austen, you will love this movie.

This is a review, specifically, for the Blu-Ray version of the Colin Firth, Jennifer Ehle version of Pride and Prejudice. There are plenty of excellent reviews about the mini-series itself, and I obviously agree with all the positive ones because I spent the money for my own Blu-Ray two-disk set. Mostly I just wanted a good, old favorite to test out the new player, and P&P is one of my all-time best loved series/movies. I've watched it on everything from a standrad television during its original broadcast, to DVD, to YouTube. So I knew it would be an enjoyable experience, but what I wasn't prepared for was what a difference the remastering made in my overall viewing pleasure.

Colors are more vibrant (though almost a bit oversaturated at points, flesh colors get very red and bright, in spots), to the point where I was surprised to see the subtle, but distinct colors in the sisters' dresses (I had thought they were ALL a sort of off-white), background colors, paintings, wallpapers, furniture, and the richness of Colin Firth's wardrobe--even the lights of the candles on desks and tables were warm and luminous. I had always loved this film for its story, now I could really appreciate the artistry involved.

I agree with a previous reviewer who complained about some grain in certain scenes, especially the opening shots with Darcy and Bingley riding around Netherfield, but at no point did it detract from the overall improvement in the look of the film, nor would it dissuade me from buying this film in this format, if you love the story as much as I do. This is now my preferred way to watch this film, and while I'll enjoy it any way I can, I will always want to see it this way, if possible. If you're a fan of this mini-series I can't recommend this format highly enough.

One note: after I put it in and was blown away by the beauty of the thing, I said "wow" rather loudly, and my wife walked in and I told her I was watching the Blu-Ray version of Pride and Prejudice. She looked at the screen and asked. "Is it any different? Looks the same, to me."

"Good Detail, Great Acting" 2009-08-06

Good version of this classic with extensive family scenes, not hurried, telling more of the story than other versions, especially the Greer Garson version. I liked the Kiera Knightly one, but it left out a lot to fit story into a theater length movie. Having said that I like having this on dvd so can I watch it in parts due to the length. I think the acting is fantastic, I can understand what's being said and the subtle nuances behind the words spoken. The actors did a great job in conveying emotions and treating the words of this classic story so carefully. Music, costuming, scenery, were great too. Other versions seem so hurried; this is more relaxing to watch.

Undoubtedly, the show is 5-star, as evidenced by the accolades heaped upon by viewers. My rating is for the poor quality of the DVDs. There are many bright white flashes in between scenes (on both discs) and it's rather annoying. I can't imagine that a show this recent is in analog format so there is no excuse for the poor quality of the DVDs. I hope the Blu Ray discs are of better quality.

Battlestar Galactica is a great series!

Since this is a fairly new series, and after reading that the entire series was filmed in high definition, I was expecting a really clear sharp picture and great audio. I was imediatly disapointed when I began watching the first disc. The picture quality is not good. It is grainny and the colors are less than brilliant. Others have justified this by saying that the series was shot this way on purpose and that the poor film quality was an artistic expression. Whatever the reason, it is so grainy and dim that is slightly distracting. I have season three on DVD and have compared the two formats. The DVD is definetly less sharp which masks some of the grain. I am not really sure which format I prefer, not a big difference.

The packaging is another issue. At first I thought the box looked cool but after a few days I decided it was just too big. It wastes a lot of space on the shelf. In fact it partialy hangs off the front of my bookcase. It is at least five times bigger than it needs to be. There are Four individual boxes, each containing a season. I thought about throwing away the big box and just displaying the four smaller ones on the shelf. The big box is sturdy and well put together but the small boxes are cheap and crappy. Its hard to get the discs in and out of the cardboard sleeves. It seems inevitable that the discs will begin to get scratched over time and with repeated uses.

The discs are not labeled so searching for an individual episode could take a while. "Caprica" is not include, nor are the webisodes.

On the good side, the audio is very good. The Blu-ray discs have more episodes than the DVDs which means less changing disks. "Razor" is included. It is nice to have the whole series all together, especially since I did not previously own all of them. You also get a toy Cylon figure which is only cool if you wanted it. I would preferred to let them keep the figure and knock ten dollars off the price.

In conclusion I would recomend that you buy this set if you are a Battlestar Galactica fan and if you don't already own it on DVD. If you do own one or more seasons on DVD I would recomend that you fill in the gaps with individual seasons of Blu-ray sets when they become available and only replace your DVD's if you feel it is worth the extra money.

I have not seen the entire series yet, but from the beginning miniseries I was hooked. I'd love to buy them by season, as how it was done on DVD. Why do the studios always lump everything into box sets on blu-ray? I don't want a fancy box set that I can't place in a slim storage center where my other blu-ray titles in traditional case fit perfectly. Please, somebody at Universal make a good decision and release them by season!

I think the cases were not designed very well. It's a big pain to take dvds out or put them back in. The worst part is that it didn't seem to come with any kind of episode guide, so you don't which episodes or special features are on which disc. Although, I must say, I enjoy the little centurion action figure.

One of the most anticipated boxsets is here, for the best series of the last decade and one of the best ever. It's a lifetime experience to watch this show in HD, while the packaging is almost stunning. I don't get the complains about that, it is indeed big, but it's very impressive while the Centurion replica is very nice and detailed. The contents of the Bluray version are great, although Face of The Enemy webisodes and the Special Episodes should have been included. All in all, highly recommeneded!

The packaging is cheap, tacky and horrible. It's obvious that over time, the discs will become so scratched as to become un-playable. Also there is no book or guide of any sort. I had to go online and download a guide. The DVD quality was distractingly bad, flat and almost one dimensional.

I exchanged the set for a the Blu-Ray, bought a Blu_ray player and boy what a difference! The packaging is the same but the Blu-Ray's image quality is spectacular and the extras are fantastic.

And as for the series itself? Battlestar Galactica is simply the best show ever in the history of television.
